Karol Butt, 36, died Feb. 9 from a gunshot wound to her mouth, autopsy reports stated. But the autopsy could not determine conclusively whether it was a suicide, an accident or a slaying.

Altus attorney David R. Thomas, representing the woman's husband, Dr. Michael Butt, said that he was told the evidence pointed to suicide.

At a news conference Friday, he released a transcript of a Feb. 14 conversation between his investigator and Dr. Chai Choi, a state medical examiner. During the conversation, the doctor said the injuries to Karol Butt looked "like a typical suicide" and could be a homicide only if the victim were in a deep coma, the transcript states.

"I don't see any coma," the transcript said Choi told the investigator in a recorded conversation.

An autopsy revealed Karol Butt had traces of a muscle relaxant, an anti-depressant and a drug similar to Valium in her system, said Dr. Philip Kemp, chief toxicologist for the medical examiner's office.

She also had a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent, less than the 0.10 percent that legally classifies a person as drunk, he said.

All the prescription drugs in her system were within accepted "therapeutic ranges" that would be prescribed, Kemp said.

The combination would have sedated her, but it's impossible to tell if she was asleep or had grown tolerant, he said.

Women shooting themselves, and in this manner, well... it's quite unusual.
