Madeline Anna Babcock
Missing since June 30,1968 from Venice, Los Angeles County, California.

madeline1.jpegMBabcock2.jpg

had a medical condition (hydrocephalus) and the right forehead bulge is certainly suggestive of craniosynostosis. These conditions may be associated in some cases. See last link.

Granted, it is a long way from Los Angeles to Shawnee, Oklahoma, and there are no connecting dots, but I think she needs to be considered as a candidate for this UID.

1) Crouzon syndrome is a form of craniosynostosis
2) Approximately 30% of individuals with Crouzon syndrome develop hydrocephalus, a condition which is characterized by impaired flow or absorption of the fluid (i.e., cerebrospinal fluid [CSF]) that circulates through cavities (ventricles) of the brain and the spinal canal, potentially leading to increasing fluid pressure within the skull (intracranial pressure) and the brain and other associated findings.

Respectfully- this condition makes the cranium UNDERsized, not bulging. And from the details in Charley- Babcock was barely treated. A spinal tap every seven years is inconsequential- no person with true hydrocephalus gets tapped that infrequently- even back then. What is more likely is that she had meningitis as a child, which caused temporary brain swelling. And seven years later, something caused her to be tapped again (intractable headache, etc)- so the 'story became she needed to be tapped every seven years. Game of telephone, you know?

I doubt any info related to Madeline Babcock's case is from a game of telephone. We all know that can happen. But Madeline's sister is a long-time WS member so we probably have more and better info in her case than in most.

Also, as the mom of a cranio kid, craniosynostosis does not necessarily make the cranium undersized. When one suture closes prematurely, the skull still grows, but will grow in the directions left available by other open sutures. I'm assuming this is bilateral closure of the coronal suture? That probably means a recessed forehead that looks unusually high, because it grows upwards instead of outwards. But I think a lot depends on how much closure, how early, and what if any medical interventions are available.

Sometimes cranio conditions are very noticeable, especially when they affect the alignment of the eyes, ears, etc., but sometimes they aren't.

Coronal suture closure is sometimes found in patients with Aperts or Crouzon's disease, but of course can be found independently of that as well.

Thank you for weighing in, Irish Eyes. I know zero about suture conditions.

Madeline also jumped out at me because of her WS family connection, I felt she needed to be first. Thanks for pointing that out (since I didn't mention that in my post).

Still looking...

I know Pat appreciates all our efforts. I hope she will eventually have the answers she seeks.

Melody Jones
19yo missing since 1983 from Earlsboro, OK (about 10-20 minutes away from UID location)

According to news archives, on May 4, 1983, Melody (Garton) Jones spent the day fishing with her family. Her 18-year-old brother gave her a ride home and dropped her off at the rural Earlsboro home she shared with her husband. He reportedly saw the door ajar with lights on inside. On the morning of May 5, 1983, Melody didn't show up for work at the Dairy Queen in Seminole. Her mother, now deceased, went to Melody's home and discovered her son-in-law's body. Melody wasn't there, but all of her personal belongings, including her purse and eyeglasses, were found inside. The couple's car was parked in the driveway.

I suggested new Namus case Edwina Bull missing from Oklahoma City since 1991; her photo is not good enough quality to show any cranial condition (if it was known/visible) OK - OK - Edwina Michelle Bull, 21, Oklahoma City, 27 Aug 1991
According to her Namus contact, Edwina currently has no identifiers in the system.

The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

CA - CA - Madeline Babcock, 35, Venice, June 1968

RBBM RSBM

Interstate 40 connects these dots...in 1968, this would have been more of Route 66 and less interstate, but a very direct path. Today, software suggests about 20 hours of travel, would have been a longer time then, but likely less speed enforcement?

Granted, a siting in Flagstaff or Albuquerque or Amarillo would be nice.

JMHO YMMV

It sounds like this girl/woman was disabled - I hope this isn't a case of caregiver abuse.

Acrobrachycephaly: "An abnormally high skull with shortness of anterior-posterior dimension. A type of craniosynostosis in which there is premature closure of the coronal suture resulting in an abnormally short anteroposterior diameter of the cranium." (SNOMED CT - Acrobrachycephaly - Classes | NCBO BioPortal)

If I'm not mistaken, this would mean a 'longer' face that looks flat when viewed from the side. I haven't been able to find many pictures of people who have this condition, but the ones I've been able to find match this description. I've attached a picture- The forehead in particular looks extremely flat.

NamUs now says she could have been as young as 14, and doesn't mention anything about acrobrachycephaly. It sounds like only her skull was found. IMO I wouldn't be surprised if this was a teaching/anatomical specimen.

Also, sorry for rambling, but there's no DNA, dentals, or fingerprints available... Is there any way to formally identify her? Maybe overlaying pictures of the skull with photos?

Is there DNA available for this case? this Jane Doe could be a very good candidate for genetic genealogy.

  • #15
Pottawatomie County Jane Doe was a child or young woman whose skull was found in Pottawatomie County On the banks of the Canadian river in Oklahoma https://[link removed]/wiki/Pottawatomie_County_Jane_Doe, other than her gender being known and her age estimate being anywhere from 14-30, and the fact she had a long potential post mortem interval of 10-50 years (probably give or take many years on either side) nothing else is known about her and naturally it'll be very hard for us to rule anyone out. Though dental records/DNA are clearly available as law enforcement has been able to rule out Carol Batterman. Please help me give this woman/girl her identity back.

Just bumping for this young lady. A new poster started an additional thread about the remains, maybe there will be some activity?

Let's call @othram to see if genetics might help. Not sure of the chances if there is only a weathered skull?

@Caring1 Hey could you post the current list of NamUs exclusions for this Jane Doe? I would greatly appreciate it.
