Two boys, ages 12 and 14 are allowed to set out without adult supervision from their residential school on a trip involving a train, a vehicle and a canoe?

And there are 11 other incidents at that school involving missing children?

Having looked up where Sioux Lookout and Cat Lake are in Ontario, I'm not surprised children kept going missing. Between the two places is 40 miles of trackless, forested wilderness! You could easily disappear into it and never be seen again.

All the more reason for necessary adult supervision and concern.

Nobody allowed anything - the article states that the boys ran away. Institutions of cultural genocide didn't tend to allow free movement of their inmates.

The boys either met with misadventure or violence on the way, or met their end at Pelican Falls and their remains were hidden.

I didn't make the connection until I read your post. Wasn't there a massive scandal in Canada a few years back over how indigenous children had been treated at these Residential Schools over the decades.

So what we've got here is a series of children who've run off into the forest to try and get back home, but haven't made it.

Yeah, most kids in countries that practiced this form of genocide against indigenous children didn't get a Rabbit Proof Fence reunion with their families, just abuse, cultural alienation, and sometimes a desperately sad end at a young age, often concealed in some way by the institution or the state itself.

It's happening right now to Ukrainian kids stolen by Russia.
