Washington Senators baseball player Ed Delahanty was big baseball star in the later part of the nineteenth century however he had a history of behavioral problems most of which came from alcohol. In June of 1903 Senators manager Tom Loftus suspended Delahanty for showing up late to games but allowed him to travel with the team. On July 2, 1903 while traveling on the Michigan Central train Delahanty began to act out of control and even threatened train passengers with a razor blade. The train conductor threw him off the train at Fort Erie, Ontario before crossing the International Railway Bridge (I have attached two photos of the bridge in this post). Delahanty took off to cross the bridge and the bridge watchman Sam Kingston went after him to see what was troubling. Kingston would tell the police that the ball player was angry and they got into an argument. When Kingston turned around to walk away he heard a splash and on looking behind him Delahanty was no longer there. Delahanty was found on July 9 by at the bottom of Niagara Fall by passengers on the Maid of the Mist.
There are several theories about what actually happened such as suicide, murdered by bookies he owed money to, accident, being robbed then murdered, or did Kingston get in a fight with Delahanty and accidentally killed him then dispose of the body by tossing him in the river. How Did Ed Delahanty Die?
