Have you seen them? Elderly couple, neighbor missing in southwest Oregon

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says an elderly couple and their neighbor have been reported missing after failing to return home from a drive.

Melvin and Alice Hawkins of Riddle and their neighbor — 70-year-old Sharon Buchanan — left Friday afternoon in the Hawkins' Chrysler PT Cruiser. Their destination was unknown, and relatives reported them missing a few days later.

Alice Hawkins, 80, Melvin Hawkins, 86, and Sharon Buchanan, 70, were found by a local elk hunter in Douglas County, and given a ride by the citizen to meet with an ambulance.

The caller stated that Buchanan died prior to him locating the vehicle.

The Hawkins were transported to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg for evaluation, though they were reported in good condition when transferred to the ambulance.

The three had gone for a drive on Friday, September 1, after 3:00 p.m. They were reported as missing to the Sheriff's Office on Sunday, September 3.

http://registerguard.com/rg/news/lo...neighbor-died--on-remote-forest-road.html.csp

"Sharon “Sherry” Buchanan, 70, who was with them, died before the three were located on a remote forest road off of Upper Cow Creek Road, near Azelea, about 20 miles southeast of Riddle."

Sounds like maybe they got stuck?
Though many details remain unknown, O'Dell said Buchanan joined her neighbors for a Sept. 1 day trip to look at wildfires burning in the area.

In the Hawkins' Chrysler PT Cruiser, they headed south on Interstate 5 toward Azalea, stopping at a general store in the small town.

The ride ended when their the vehicle got stuck on a rut-filled dirt road that was overgrown with grass. None of the three had a cellphone and they were too far from anything to walk for help.

"They did have some Coca-Cola in the car with them," O'Dell said. "But they did not have medications, they did not have sufficient food and they did not have water."

Their neighbor, 70-year-old Sharon Buchanan, died the night before the hunter arrived. Sgt. Brad O'Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said
she "quietly passed," likely from natural causes.

He said a medical examiner planned to examine health records before listing a cause of death. No autopsy is planned.

Even though the couple survived it is very sad for all.
RIP Sharon
