A search is underway for a missing woman in East Portland. The Portland Police Bureau's Missing Persons Unit is asking for the public to keep an eye out for her.

On Friday, August 26, 2022, East Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of a missing person in the 7500 block of Southeast Lambert Street. They were told that Yueliu Tan, 68, went out with her cart to collect cans and had not returned home. Yueliu was last seen leaving her home on foot at 5:45 am.

Yueliu is an Asian female, 4 ft 6 in tall, 145 lbs, with short black and gray hair (photo). Yueliu was last seen wearing a yellow shirt, with multiple other colors and patterns (photo), black pants and a red Nike hat. Yueliu has no diagnosed health concerns but is only familiar with her neighborhood. Yueliu walks her neighborhood several times a week. Yueliu has no phone or money and does not use TriMet. Yueliu’s family says that she only speaks Chinese.

Officers have searched for Yueliu without success. If anyone sees Yueliu, please call 911. If anyone has other information about this case, e-mail the Missing Persons Unit at [email protected].

I hope they’ve checked Flavel Park. I’ve been trying to come up with areas that might be littered with cans. Portland has some Adopt-One-Block campaigns and the sites I’ve checked show Portland has many clean up litter programs. So, I’m stuck… Because I don’t know if she was collecting for recyclable cash or volunteerism.

Here’s an example of the Adopt campaign. I zeroed in on this one because I’m assuming each block has a designated member that might see her walking around. I wish I knew if her neighborhood participates.

Adopt One Block is a local initiative started by Portland resident Frank Moscow in late 2020. Adopt One Block enables you to clean the block you love the most, when and how you want, with cleanup supplies they deliver to you for free. “Block Ambassadors” care for their block. AdoptOneBlock supply the tools, support and connections.

Oh this one scares me. The article above shows "Yueliu was last seen leaving her home on foot at 5:45 am". <BBM>. In checking the records it looks like sunrise in Portland OR on August 26 was 6:25 am so she left in the dark to look for cans? I wonder if she used a flashlight (in case someone remembers seeing someone with a flashlight that morning).

Maybe she tried to check dumpsters before the trash trucks made rounds and could have fallen in one?

My heart sunk a little when I read your post. What if she did fall in? She’s only 4’6”. I’m 4’9”. Wait. Okay, I’m back. I just went out and stood by my dumpster measuring myself (Axle, my cat stared at me like I’d lost my mind) and I’m about 1” taller but when I looked in - I could tell I would have a helluva time climbing out. Mine was practically empty so I wouldn’t have anything to crawl up on but if I did, I’m pretty sure the dumpster would tump over. oh man, I hope she shows up soon.

How is it possible that she can only speak Chinese? She can't speak ANY English at all? Not even a few basic phrases?
That's worrying in itself.

I don't know how long she's been in the US. But being able to help yourself and learn a little English is a good way of blending in and getting to know your local people and the area.

Does Oregon have a huge Chinese community? Are there people or friends she may have visited? Perhaps collecting cans was just a façade and she went off further to do other things?

MOO

From 1880 to 1910 Portland’s Chinatown was second in size only to San Francisco’s. Today, the growing Chinese population is spread throughout the city, as are a variety of Chinese-owned businesses, Chinese schools and activities.

Good news! Link updated -- she was found safe.

Yueliu Tan has been located. She is safe and has been reunited with her family.

Thank God! So glad to see that she's made it home safe. Wondering if she just got lost and couldn't communicate.
