Bump.
Quite an interesting case. Giovanetti was a significant figure but the question is who he was working with or for. Philadelphia boxing was largely controlled by the mob for decades. An article in Boxing News at The misadventures of a boxing manager | Boxing News from 2022 refers to the belief that Giovanetti was connected to organised crime. From census records on Ancestry it seems probable that Giovanetti was 44 when he disappeared rather than 41 as both the 1940 and 1950 census show a birth in 1933. This is also more consistent with him becoming a boxing manager in the 1950s. A story from Sports Illustrated from 1964, archived at https://vault.si.com/vault/1964/05/18/a-mighty-desirable-fellow quotes Joey Giardello (the world champion he 'advised') saying that Arnold claimed to be 28 but was really 32. The answer to this case almost certainly connects to the Philadelphia mob.

There is an oddity concerning the disappearance of Arnold. As an associate of the Philadelphia mob (or even if he was associated with another mob family) action against him in the area controlled by the Philadelphia family would have required the consent of Angelo Bruno, the head of the family. But Bruno was possibly the least murderous mafia don of all and there is no suggestion anywhere of his even being aware of Giovanetti. This makes the disappearance more puzzling as either someone (a rogue member or another family) acted against the rules or the mob were not the primary players. It could have been a minor play in the start of the war to overthrow Bruno (which succeeded in 1980) but 1977 seems too early (and Giovanetti too insignificant). I remain convinced Arnold met an end at the hands of criminal associates, but the mob were not the only criminal players in boxing and I am now leaning toward the guilty being from other interests.
