PA - Dog rescuer investigated for animal abuse & bestiality

 • #21
I checked with my vet and under no circumstances would he recommend anyone do this at home. Mind you, this is my vet. I am not speaking for anyone else's vet. But the response was "H*ll no."

On the off chance that anyone reading this thread believes that this is appropriate to do or try at any given time, I am begging you to check with your vet. This is the WWW. I dont believe we have a vet posting with us here. In lieu of that, please please please check in with a vet before you ever insert anything into your poor doggie. Ugh.

I don't know if we have a vet posting with us either. But I have NEVER heard of this practice as being anything other than abusive.
If your dog has issues with their anal glands, bring them to a vet.
And if your vet suggests something such as is described above, you need a new vet.

I don't think you'd find many rescuers or vet techs who don't know how to empty anal glands. I've used the same animal medical hospital for 18 years and my vets were very clear that it would be helpful to learn to do this myself just as I've learned to administer injections and do other medical procedures. The alternative is to pay for an office visit every few weeks for some dogs. Little dogs are notorious for becoming impacted often (a painful and expensive situation, sometimes requiring lancing) and the process takes less than a minute. It's uncomfortable for some dogs but is over fast and then they feel much better. I'm quick and then my doggies get a treat.

The digital emptying of canine anal glands is not abusive (if done correctly) but I really don't think that's what is going on in these videos. It's surely not done bare-handed and is not done twice daily. Something else is going on here, I'm afraid.

I know a LOT of rescue orgs and a lot of vets. None that I know of that would recommend using a matchstick to express anal glands that need to be expressed and/or are impacted.

That is an incredibly dangerous thing, imo.

I will see if I can get a verified vet on here to comment.

Let's keep the discussion focused on what is going on in this particular case as it seems like animal abuse.

I am hoping the MSM source does a follow up to this story and what kind of criminal investigation is going on.

This is one of the rescue orgs thoughts on the matter
(snipped for copyright):

<We remain concerned about the dogs and wish there had been a quick resolution to the situation. Unfortunately, this was not the case, and we share everyone's frustration. We do not envy the animal control officers and county SPCA, and respect the job they do and the steps they must take to properly investigate reports of alleged abuse and build a case against those who are, in fact, guilty of abusing their pets. We have contacted our attorney and continue to monitor the situation closely.>

Out of my four wonderful dogs I've had the pleasure to "raise", I had to regularly express the glands of one, a male beagle. Nasty. Real, REAL disgusting, but a necessary evil to avoid an even worse situation of him becoming infected, or it leaking on my furniture. One little drip of that stuff would stink up the whole room. And he'd "get it on you" even sometimes. yuck. Now THAT was being violated! (me!)

I've had instruction from at least 2 different vets on what to watch for and how to do it. One of the dog obedience classes I went to (long before the existence of my Jack, the anal-leaking dog) actually educated everyone on it and even demonstrated on one of the dogs.

I had to do it often (at least every other month), so I just did it at the end of a bath so I could rinse it away before letting out my breath and hopefully without having to see it. No gloves either. I must be a real perv. Guess some would consider that barebacking?

It's really not that big a deal. I'd do it every day if it meant I could have him back with me. :( But I'd complain about it a whole lot.

That was a lot of talk about something verrrry gross, sorry bout that. Just, it sounds like this woman was innocent, and if so, I feel really bad for her. Seriously, how humiliating!

Disclaimer: I haven’t watched the video. Not the kind of thing I wanted to see if it was abuse/bestiality. I’ll watch it now.

May 2012:

Since then an extensive investigation was conducted by the DA’s Office, police, and animal experts. According to a report by CBS 21, the District Attorney says Ms. Wise was doing nothing illegal and she would not face any charges...

Wise told CBS 21 from the start that she was acting in the dog's best interest and her vet knew what she was doing. This was all confirmed by authorities...

It had been suggested by another reporter that the video was altered. Be advised, that the video has not been deemed by authorities as being altered by the witness.

With all due respect, Nurse Beeme, I am not clear on why you snipped the helpful explanation of expressing anal glands, here, but not elsewhere. A few people have said that is what the person charged was doing, so it seems helpful to know what it is. Or have I missed something?

The veterinarian assistant suggested this for one of my dogs. No one needs to do it themselves, but probably you should ask your vet to check them, every now and then.

Although, I have a hard time even reading about animal abuse, I am glad that someone has included dogs/animals on Websleuths crime in the news. There are horrible things that go on, but if no one knows about it, then it is invisible.

The only way that these abuses will ever be controlled is by informing the public.

The police found there was no animal abuse in this case. Iirc the dogs had some health problems that made them unable to defecate normally so they had to be stimulated to make them defecate... And the vet confirmed he had told the woman to do this.

March 2012:

DA Kearney made sure to clearly state that such an explanation is not normal policy, but he added that a "sustained effort by some to force prosecution has resulted in the character of the private individual dog owner, along with members of the SPCA, being publicly debased to the point that they are now receiving anonymous threats."...

With a lack of knowledge and a zealot’s passion, the six-hour video was altered and “released” to media outlets...

Unaltered, the video shows the dog positioning itself to defecate but being unsuccessful. The owner then lifts the tail and massages the dog's hindquarters using the palm of one hand on the dog's anal region."...

A humane officer found that the huskies were living in a clean and sanitary environment, were adequately nourished, and showed no signs of injury. Veterinary records indicated that the dogs had more than 90 visits over the last 13 years and were never treated for injuries or traumas. It was the decision of the Kearney that charges were not warranted in this investigation and the matter is now closed.

Perhaps instead of recording six hours of video over a four-day period, the justifiably concerned neighbor should have approached Nena Wise first. This approach may have averted the threats that York County SPCA members are now receiving.

To be honest, how many people would be willing to do that for a special needs dog? These dogs probably faced being killed because no-one would want to adopt them... Really, they are lucky to have found this woman who is willing to do this gross thing for them.
