A 32-year-old father from Oakmont, Pa., was found guilty in a non-jury trial Thursday of abuse, assault, and murder in the 2020 death of his 3-year-old daughter, Bella Seachrist.

Judge Bruce R. Beemer convicted Jose Eduardo Salazar-Ortiz of third-degree murder, aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children and conspiracy, Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas records reviewed by Law&Crime show. Prior to her death, Bella was “tortured” and “looked like a child out of a concentration camp,” according to a pediatrician’s testimony cited by WPXI.

Two women were also arrested in the case, but their criminal cases have yet to go to trial.

Investigators determined that the victim “suffered from prolonged physical and mental abuse” and that Salazar-Ortiz, Bella’s 30-year-old stepmom Laura Michelle Ramriez (note: this is the spelling of the last name that appears in court records), and Ramriez’s 23-year-old sister Alexis Melissa Herrera were all to blame.

Herrera, of Charlotte, N.C., faces charges of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children, unlawful restraint of a minor, and criminal homicide. Ramriez is charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children, unlawful restraint, criminal homicide, conspiracy, and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child.

Reading that story has made me so angry. im also shocked that the girlfriend has been charged with deviant sexual behaviour to a minor. What in the world is it coming to.

sick to my stomach
I'm so sorry dear little Bella
may your murderers rot

Police also charged the girl's father, Jose Eduardo Salazar-Ortiz Sr., and Ramriez's sister, Alexis Herrera. Court paperwork shows Salazar-Ortiz Sr. was found guilty of third-degree murder and multiple other charges after a non-jury trial in May. A trial is scheduled for Herrera in 2024, according to court documents.

Ramirez's sister, Alexis Herrera, is also accused of witnessing and participated in the abuse of Bella.

Ramirez's sister, Alexis Herrrera, is also facing a slew of charges in this case, including homicide, child endangerment, and false imprisonment. Her charge of “unlawful restraint” was dismissed. She is scheduled to go to trial in January, WTAE report

Sadly, this isn't the only case of child abuse out of Pennsylvania this week. A 24-year-old woman from Pennsylvania will be the third and last culprit to be thrown into prison following the brutal murder of a three-year-old girl.

After admitting guilt to several offenses related to the murder of young Bella Rae Seachrist, Alexis Herrera will go to prison with her sister and brother-in-law, according to court documents. Herrera entered a guilty plea to one count of general criminal homicide, counts of aggravated assault , endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful restraint, and conspiracy to conduct criminal homicide.

Police found the young child unresponsive in a bathtub during the summer of 2020, having been beaten and starved by a trio of assailants.

Rather of entering a plea to a particular charge of first-degree, second-degree, or manslaughter, Herrera will be surrendering to Allegheny County Judge Bruce R. Beemer's will by entering a plea to the latter open-ended homicide charge.

At an as-yet-to-be-scheduled "degree of guilt hearing," Beemer will preside over the presentation of evidence by both parties about Herrera's degree of guilt—or lack thereof—in Bella's murder. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the judge will next determine if she was guilty of first-degree murder, third-degree murder, or involuntary manslaughter.

Herrera will be imprisoned for Bella's homicide with her sister Laura Ramirez and her brother-in-law Jose Salazar-Ortiz Sr. Herrera faces a sentence that could run from 10 years to life without the possibility of parole.
