Pennsylvania State Police are searching for an arsonist who “caused a significant amount of damage” to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s official residence in Harrisburg.

In a statement posted to social media, Shapiro wrote that his family was woken up at 2 a.m. on Sunday by banging on the door from state police. He added that he and his wife, Lori, were “eternally grateful” for authorities who helped evacuate the family...

Harrisburg, Pa. – Police said Sunday that officers evacuated Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family from the official governor’s residence after someone set fire to the building.

No one was injured and the fire was extinguished, according to authorities...

A shame that this happened on the first night of Passover :(

The Governor and his family woke to Pennsylvania State Police banging on their door at 2am to evacuate them. No one was injured and the fire was extinguished.

"The fire broke out overnight on the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover, which Shapiro and his family had celebrated at the governor’s official residence in the state capital of Harrisburg. Pennsylvania State Police said in a statement that, while the investigation was ongoing, they were “prepared to say at this time that this was an act of arson."

From Gov Shapiro's Twitter:

Last night at about 2AM, my family and I woke up to bangs on the door from the Pennsylvania State Police after an arsonist set fire to the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg. The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire was on the scene and while they worked to put out the fire, we were evacuated from the Residence safely by Pennsylvania State Police and assisted by Capitol Police. Thank God no one was injured and the fire was extinguished.Every day, we stand with the law enforcement and first responders who run towards danger to protect our communities. Last night, they did so for our family – and Lori and I are eternally grateful to them for keeping us safe.

Harrisburg, PA – On April 13, 2025, at approximately 2:00 a.m., members of the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire responded to the Governor’s Residence, located on North Front Street, Harrisburg City, Dauphin County, for the report of a fire. While the investigation is ongoing, the State Police is prepared to say at this time that this was an act of arson.

While the fire was successfully extinguished, it caused a significant amount of damage to a portion of the residence.

The Governor and his family were present in a different part of the residence. They were evacuated safely and were not injured.

The Pennsylvania State Police, Troop H is currently on scene and spearheading a multi-agency investigation.

There is a reward of up to $10,000 offered through PSP Tips for the arrest and conviction for the individual(s) responsible. Anyone with information should call 1-800-4PA TIPS (1-800-472-8477).

Pennsylvania State Police are searching for an arsonist who “caused a significant amount of damage” to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s official residence in Harrisburg.

Shapiro offered Passover well wishes just hours before the attack on the residence. The governor, who is Jewish, shared a photo of his Seder table on social media.

State police described the probe into the incident as a multiagency investigation and are offering a $10,000 reward for information.

In my mind, there's a very strong possibility that the timing of this arson in relation to Passover is not a coincidence. JMO.

It could be, or it could be that the arsonist just chose a moment when they knew the governor was home because of his social media post.

MOO

Glad the family didn't get badly hurt. Just wonder about the "why" of it... SMH.
The family had just celebrated Passover. Was this crime perpetrated purposefully at the time of Passover?
I would assume that since this was done in and to the state Governor's office -- owned by the state of PA -- that there would be very serious charges.
Surely the perpetrator(s) will be caught. Grrrrr.

Photos of the damage. I hope they find the responsible party quickly and that it's looked at as a hate crime.

From the attached article:

"Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo confirmed his office is looking to charge whoever is responsible with aggravated arson and attempted murder as the fire was seen as a direct attempt on the Governor's and his family's lives."

Suspect arrested in alleged arson at Pennsylvania governor’s house that forced Shapiro and family to evacuate

38yo man, Cody Balmer, of Harrisburg, PA

“If he was trying to terrorize our family, our friends, the Jewish community, who joined us for a Passover Seder in that room last night, hear me on this we celebrated our faith last night, proudly and in a few hours, we will celebrate our second Seder of Passover. Again, proudly, no one will deter me or my family, or any Pennsylvanian from celebrating their faith openly and proudly,” Shapiro said.

Sounds to me like the actual room they held their Passover Seder in was what was set fire. Sounds pretty targeted to me. JMO.

New info just added to the above link:

Balmer hasn’t been charged yet, but potential charges will include attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, aggravated assault against an enumerated person, officials said at a Sunday news conference.

The suspect allegedly came over a fence around the residence before setting the fire. The attack was “targeted” but a specific motive is still unknown, Gov. Josh Shapiro said at the conference.

I just heard on NBC News that the arsonist appeared to target the room where the Seder was held.

I'm having EU data blocking issues, but if you check this link and search Cody Balmer, it reveals some info.
