Columbia man who raped, killed 12-year-old girl gets life in prison [update]

Jason Shackelford wanted to punish his ex-girlfriend for telling him she wanted him to move out of her Columbia apartment last year.

So after she left for work the evening of Feb. 8, 2023, Jason Shackelford raped her 12-year-old daughter, Elaina Smith, and strangled her in a bedroom where they’d been watching a movie. He then went downstairs, drank alcohol, went back upstairs hours later and saw Elaina’s lifeless body, fluid coming from her mouth.
