East Hempfield Twp. man charged with killing sister headed to county court [update]
Mar 30, 2022
SBBM

East Hempfield Township police responded to the Ayala family home for a mental health call on March 10 — three hours before Joel Ayala Sr. called 911 to report finding his daughter dead, wrapped in blankets in the garage.

The earlier call was about Ayala’s son Joel Ayala Jr., 20,... [snip] Ayala Sr. had initially called police just before 7:30 p.m. He had arrived home from work and running errands to find his son holding an AK-47 rifle,... [snip] By the time police arrived at the home in the 2900 block of Spring Valley Road, Ayala Sr. had already taken his rifle back from his son and secured it. [snip]

“The father was concerned about depression, isolating behavior,” Chase testified. “There was some concern that was building up.” But, Chase testified, officers who responded had no reason to seek an involuntary commitment. Ayala Jr. hadn’t made “overt threats to harm himself or others,” Chase said.

No one would realize until later that Linnette Ayala was already dead.

Expressing of course sympathy for the loved ones of his sister — I’m grateful he didn’t shoot up a school. He is the high-level psychological profile of a school shooter.

What can we do as a society to inspire parents to pull the alarm earlier? This father clearly knew this son had major mental health concerns and no aversion to violence. This father “was concerned” but “had no reason to seek an involuntary commitment” (I am sure, 100%, that the police have a long history of reporting to this house. Of course he had reason. But stigma and fear of cost and fear of estrangement and a total unfamiliarity with what inpatient mental health care is together netted out with this father opting to do nothing)

There are probably 200, 300, maybe 500 mothers and fathers in America right now watching this same isolating and mentally fraught behavior from kids who evoke comparisons to Dylan Klebold. They don’t ask for help. They deny to themselves. One of the big questions of our time is, how can we compel these parents to reach out? How can we get the shame and blame and fear down enough for someone like, this guy’s father, or Adam Lanza’s mother Nancy, to reach for the phone?

The father is fortunate to be alive.

Idk what the killer's psychological profile may be, but there is a lot less help out there than you think. Inpatient psych male beds? Maybe you can get one in a few weeks, but not too often. Yes, there are lots of 800 phone numbers and volunteer help lines. Just try getting someone that hasn't done anything yet into a lengthy, helpful psych hospital stay. I have spent days at work trying to get a psychotic patient into one. The beds are not there.

I think that the father was doing everything he could to sound the alarm and the cops found no reason to seek an involuntary commitment, not the father. See quote from article:
