Looks bad, there will most likely be injuries if not worse, wonder if the door blew off while taxiing or they forgot to close it and this happened ?

There's no history of doors of these type planes "blowing off". If not latched properly it can pop open slightly on takeoff (can happen with most any light plane). It's really noisy which is distracting and might create a little bit of drag but it's not an emergency. Looks like from the data of his speed he got seriously slow in the turn, and stalled the airplane as the wings lost lift. There was a similar crash this year Van's RV-10 aircraft killing 2 January 2 in Fullerton when the door came open on takeoff (www.ntsb.gov for the preliminary report).

When the news broke it appeared from the videos and article that the door was open but it also sounded as if the cause was unknown ?
If the manufacturing was at fault, that would have been reported by now, so maybe not ?
Omo.

That is not unusual- though it is likely a step or two above the average age.

In the end, however, small planes that are flown regularly and are well maintained (key word) can fly for decades -and then some.

Well maintained over a period of 45 years would likely include scheduled total over hauls of the frame and avionics as well as re- builds of the engine etc.
