Man arrested after explosive found in luggage at US airport

The device, detected in screening at a Pennsylvania airport, "posed a significant risk to the aircraft".

He fled the airport after his name was called over the loud speaker, agents say, and was arrested at home later that evening.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials say they spotted the device during a routine screening.

Five minutes after he was paged over the airport loud speaker, Mr Muffley was seen by security cameras leaving the airport, the court papers say. He was traced to his home in Lansford, Pennsylvania, later on Monday.

He is charged with possession of an explosive in an airport and possessing or attempting to place an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft.

“The relative, who did not want to be named, told 69 News, "It's nice the whole country thinks he's smart enough to build a bomb." However, the relative said, "He's just not that smart."

This is either a canny defense strategy OR just a brutal takedown of the accused.

Man accused of bringing explosives in LVIA luggage pleads guilty

Marc Muffley, 41, of Lansford in Carbon County, had an entire row of family and friends supporting him at the federal courthouse in Allentown. He was arrested and charged last year.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — A Carbon County man accused of packing a makeshift explosive device into his luggage, then trying to board a plane at Lehigh Valley International Airport, pleaded guilty Wednesday to two charges.

Mark Muffley, 41, of Lansford, entered pleas to attempting to bring explosive materials onto an airplane and possessing such an item within the bounds of an airport.

Together, the charges could carry a maximum of 15 years in prison. Muffley will be sentenced later.

Muffley entered the pleas after extensive questioning by U.S. District Court Judge John Gallagher to ensure he understood the ramifications.

Gallagher, as is normal in a plea hearing, questioned at length Muffley's willingness to formally plead guilty. He asked more than 10 questions about Muffley's personal circumstances and how they could affect his understanding of what he's getting into.

Those included Muffley's struggles with mental health, bipolar disorder and drugs.
