This wasn't a breakdown of the CYS system in this case. A breakdown of family relationships is what caused this terrible tragedy . CYS can't possibly keep up with every single child who has a birth record in any particular locale. In our civilized society, we rely on family members for that basic care-task.

I have to agree, based on what I know so far.
Here in NC, children, or anyone planning to attend a county school as a new student, must register for public school as a new student. I took my son to get registered for kindergarten, and he was "in the system." He entered public kindergarten within a few months. (This was before we had pre-k.)

The county where we live has a total population of 1.11 million. If someone registers their child for kindergarten or whatever grade as a "first-timer" in this county and the child doesn't show up for school that year, I don't know if any follow-up is done, although IMO it would be unlikely and darn near impossible. There's also, as is common, a number of private schools in this area.

If a child is never registered to attend school, how would the county know to follow up?

Agree, Lusi -- it's the only thing that makes sense.
Why him? Did he have a handicap or other perceived negative? We'll never know. I just cannot even think about what that little boy endured. I just can't. What monsters.

he kept his son maxwell schollenberger in his room since he was toddler?....he died at 11 yrs of age from starvation,head trauma,they lived in lebanon county,pa....step mother's name is kimberly maurer,she was charged as well.....their trial was to start feb,22,2021....haven't seen updates....

Schollenberger Jr. plead guilty in February to charges that included criminal homicide, child endangerment and conspiracy for both counts.


There were three other children in the house who said they almost never saw Max. All three children were well-cared for and healthy.

“They would describe the foul stench that emanated from Max Schollenberger’s bedroom,” said Graf. “How they were told to ignore him and not talk to him. One child described when our defendants would enter that little boy’s bedroom, that child would scream and he would cry.”

Kimberly Maurer, 37, was found guilty of murder, first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree conspiracy to endanger the welfare of a child in the 2020 death of Maxwell Schollenberger, 12, according to court records reviewed by Oxygen.com.
