OH NO. I attended IUP from 1997-1999, and am familiar wth the Chevy Chase Community Center located near campus; once a month, the Center hosted a Saturday night dance party that was LGBTQIA+ welcoming and open to anyone 18+, so it was a regular outing for members of IUP’s LGBTQIA student group (we really had no other options for queer-friendly nightlife anywhere else in the town!). The other Saturday night dance parties held at the Chase Center were only for folks 21+, but I think they, too, were LGBTQIA-inclusive events. The incident reported on this thread seems to have occurred in the early hours of Sunday, and I fear that it may have happened during or directly after one of these dances.

The very existence of such a broadminded place in a part of the state that seemed to me both exceedingly conservative and actively hostile to people in the LGBTQIA+ community was a delightful surprise to young adult me, not to mention a much needed corrective to my simplistic view of rural towns as “backwards“ places populated solely by ignorant, illiberal folks. My heart breaks for the victims and for all residents of Indiana for whom the Chase Center provided a safe space for them to be themselves.

Bivens did confirm that there were multiple shooters and that dozens of gunshots were fired inside the Chevy Chase Community Center ...

Authorities are unsure if the shooters are still in the region or if they fled; however, Bivens said that the incident is believed to be an isolated event ...

Second article claims the shooting had something to do with a noise complaint, and the party was not related to IUP’s Homecoming festivities that weekend.
