Sounds like a stressful job. As the article mentioned, fires often attract a crowd of onlookers and media figures who can hamper firefighting efforts. I wonder if Tony has had any especially stressful events recently.

It could just as well be something in his regular job. The firefighting position is a volunteer position. . So he likely has a whole other work life outside of that. That takes a very special human being to take on that job as a volunteer. I hope he is safe and home soon. His wife does have a link up on FB with another picture of him. His hair is currently a bit longer than the missing photo, slightly past his shoulders.

*Michael and Nancy Chipps walked along a trail at the Lock 12 Historic Area near the Susquehanna River in Lower Chanceford Township, York County on Monday."We wanted to take a walk down here and get a feel for what was what," said Michael. They say this is where their son, Tony Bortner, regularly came to clear his head. "Tony's always been a person who likes nature, he's not confrontational and when he gets wound up or whatever, he'll just run down here and go for a walk," continued Michael, Tony's stepfather. The 50-year-old Windsor man, who has been a fire police captain with the Laurel Fire Company #1 for years, was last seen on Oct. 17

This area isn't too far from my home. I can tell you, there's a lot of bottom land along the Susquehanna river there, lots of nooks and crannies, rocky. The river itself is shallow in lots of places, known to be dangerous. It's not unusual to read about boating and swimming deaths.

It's hard to say, but this one doesn't sound like it'll have a good ending.

Tuesday was the fifth day of the search for a missing York County fire police captain, and there was still no sign of him.

His wife, Brenda, is trying to stay positive.

"I just want him home. If he doesn't want to go home, I just want to know he's safe," she said.

She said she and her husband had an argument before he disappeared. She also said the two have fought before, but he always called or came home.

what is a 'Lock 12'?
As others have said, a lock is a way to raise and lower boats on a canal. The boat enters, then gates close on both ends, and the water level raises, or lowers....then ONE gate is opened, and the boat is at the 'new' level of the canal (either higher, or lower, depending on the direction)

The old 'locks' and pathways next to the canals in many areas of the U.S. have become historic sites and recreation areas.

This area along the Susquehanna is just FULL of nooks and crannies and water pools and rocks and huge boulders and dropoffs....folks go to climb, swim, boat, etc. The river itself is known to be dangerous, deceiving. It's quite shallow in spots, but it is a very large river and drains a massive area of Pennsylvania and up in to New York.
