San Diego based Petco has pulled all China-made jerky treats from its stores, following years of reports that dogs have fallen ill or even died after eating them. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received over 4,800 complaints about the duck, chicken or sweet potato flavored rawhide treats since 2007, but despite tests haven't established a link between the treats and dogs' illnesses.

1,000 deaths have been reported following consumption of the treats, but again, no firm evidence, such as toxic substances, has been found.

Petco says that customer concerns have led to the withdrawing of the products, which will now be sourced from the Netherlands instead. Another leading US retailer, PetSmart, says it plans to pull the China-made treats in March.
