Stefan Zielonka was a non-commissioned officer serving as a cypher operator for the Military Information Services and later the Military Intelligence Service. On 19th April 2009, Zielonka disappeared. His wife reported his disappearance to the police on the 19th, but she couldn't tell when exactly Zielonka disappeared. That's because the couple lived separately within their house in Warsaw, and mostly avoided each other. According to his friends, Zielonka was supposed to come to work after a visit to the doctor, but he didn't show up. Afterwards, they informed Zielonka's wife.

After interviewing his wife and his neighbours, the police concluded that Zielonka disappeared on the 12th or 13th of April. The authorities later reviewed CCTV footage and found that Zielonka was spotted by cameras at 17:09 on April 12th, heading to a nearby bus stop. During the investigation, authorities came up with two theories. That Zielonka took his own life due to mental health issues, like depression, or that he deserted and joined the Russian intelligence agency or the Chinese intelligence agency. That's because he was an expert in cryptography, and he had knowledge of NATO communications systems. It was even claimed by a website, Intelligence Online, that Zielonka, along with his family, fled to Shanghai, where he started to work for Chinese intelligence. The website also claimed that Zielonka's death was faked by Chinese intelligence. However, Zielonka's boss denied claims that he was a spy and stated that Zielonka's knowledge was outdated. Furthermore, his neighbours state that Zielonka was helpful and calm, while his wife claimed that she did not see a change in Zielonka's mood. According to attendees of a cryptography course, which Zielonka was part of, he spoke of his plans he wanted to do in the future.

On 27th April 2010, Stefan Zielonka's body was found in an advanced state of decomposition on the banks of the Vistula River, with a rope hanging from a nearby tree and documents bearing his name. It was found by two passers-by. DNA testing of some of the bones confirmed that they belong to Zielonka. According to a military doctor who looked after Zielonka, he complained of sleeplessness and nerve problems after he suffered a back injury. Two neighbours also claimed that Zielonka looked upset when they encountered him. Ultimately, investigators concluded that Zielonka took his own life.
