I don't have any medical expertise at all, but reading through information this morning, it seems as though the victims were stabbed with the knife in similar areas on the body (with some variations such as Xana's extensive defensive wounds, for example).

Sure seems like he entered with a plan on where on the body to stab in order to kill. He didn't bring the knife, it seems, just to be a threat, but made specific plans on how to use it to kill.

No surprise that he intended to kill, but I think he did his homework rather then rely on the vague idea that knives can be lethal.

jmopinion
Totally agree. He had one goal when he went in that house and it was to kill. You don't buy that knife and bring it for any other reason but to kill. Undoubtedly he studied exactly where to stab someone. Absolute monster, and then he thought he was being too clever by half to make that his area of study. Even though it looks like he wiped his phone, computer, etc, if they did find anything, he would claim he was researching it for school. Diabolical.

I hope we learn more about the routes he took those 23+ times. Will we know if he paused at the house?

My thoughts have been that he started driving around looking for the right house(s) for window-peeping, easy access, desirable victims - and 1122 fit the bill. I think he spent time parked above the house with the view through the windows.

After he picked the house, maybe he did then figure out who lived there and followed on social media, but I really do think it was the house that drew him, at least initially.

And I do suspect he slithered inside during at least one nighttime test run, when roommates were sleeping. Or, at least lurked in the yard as Kaylee noticed. Some of DM's nervousness might have been her noticing/hearing/sensing someone was messing around with the house in the weeks before the murders. (I hope she and BF are some day able to sleep well.)

I'm curious if he also lurked around other houses.

jmopinion
Yup - that’s where I sit as well.

I am reminded of The Gift of Fear, hearing about the noises, the open door, someone watching from above. All those little things that make you pause and then you feel something in the pit of your stomach. The girls were a bit on edge but probably just shook it off as being silly but Dylan was worried and so was Kaylee.

Yup, he was out there, watching, thinking, planning.

The house worked for him. He honed in.

We will never know if digitally he was watching as well. Just because he scrubbed his computer clean doesn’t mean a link wasn’t there. We’ll just never know.

Yesterday was a very emotional day for so many. I was spent when it was over.

I’ll be happy to never see his face, or speak his name ever again, until they take him out in a pine box. Then I’ll hold a toast to Kaylee, Maddie, Xana and Ethan. They will always be remembered.

IMO, as I think justirish posted, it could've been a "flashbang":

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

M84 stun grenade
A stun grenade, also known as a flash grenade, flashbang, thunderflash, or sound bomb,is a non-lethal explosive device used to temporarily disorient an enemy's senses. Upon detonation, a stun grenade produces a blinding flash of light and an extremely loud "bang". They are often used in close-quarters combat, door breaching, and riot control, typically to stun enemies or distract them.
..................

Despite their less-lethal nature, stun grenades are still capable of causing harm, and can injure or kill when detonating in close proximity. They are also capable of sparking fires.

THIS looks like what was described in the JP book, what DM saw him carrying..."a firefighter"

And? It doesn't change the info that was in the Prime series given by people who also live there. I'm from big cities and that experience would come with me to a rural area. I would never not lock my door regardless of the attitude or history of the place, but that's because I have big city experience. There probably are still places in the US that are this safe, I'd still lock my door.

Also, the point of my comment was to point to the accessibility aspect for BK. He didn't have to search and search for a house that had an unlocked door. It is very unlikely that was a driving factor in his choice, but rather the person he honed in on. Unlocked was the norm, not the exception.

I understand. Everyone I know here has always locked their doors. JMOO, so I think some of this is spin.

Reading between the lines (redactions) this report appears that it could be saying that Alivea sent a Facebook post by Dylan (about the incident) to the police. I wonder what was contained in that post that made Alivea think the police should look into this.

As we know, the Goncalves family was working diligently on their own, searching across social media and collecting clues they found along the way. Perhaps one day more on this specific detail will come out. JMOO.

Here's a view of 1122 Kings Rd. you don't see too often. The house is on the right, sitting back a bit. There are other homes and apartments all around the area. including on the left side of the street. And the street is rather narrow. It doesn't seem like a good house to target for such a horrific crime - unless the perp is obsessed with the residents.
There are easy viewing opportunities in the parking area to the south and east of the house, adjacent to a small wooded area. Plus plenty of street parking for numerous visitors and non-residents. The link below (posted at the beginning of each thread) I always found to be a useful resource, showing the home from numerous angles.

Did anyone even mention his name during sentencing, other than when reading official docs? It was good that he is now just recognized as an inmate with a number.

BF also started she saw a flash and heard fireworks. I don't think she would have seen light from the living area upstairs down in her corner unless he went downstairs or maybe peered over the railing.
I didn't know BF also heard and saw the noise and flash. Scratch what I said!

  • #149
Several times in the document dump, the witnesses describe what they thought was a firework. Any thoughts on what this could be?

(For citation's sake, most recent I've read this: "At around 0400 or 0420 hours, [she] heard what she thought was a firework and saw a spark on the ground from under her door" - File: Supp 89_Redacted, page 1)
Under one of the victim's door? Thanks.

It sounds like the victims and surviving roommates had no prior contact with the perp, but may have been unknowingly creeped out by his actions ?
It's been stated there was no connection between BK and the victims; but I've assumed that was mainly on their part, not his.
They may not have known he existed.
However he prob. didn't pick that house at random & I think he'd watched them and maybe knew the habits and patterns of the household's occupants.
Also, even without him possibly stalking their socials, he could've physically been stalking them just by watching them at night ?
Thus, no online connection.
Imo.

Interview with Kohberger in PA-#157
1. WatchGuard Event: NA
Additional Responding Officers: NA
Case number added to WG: NA
2. Evidence
NA-video/audio and transcript of interview added to case file 3. Narrative
On December 29, 2022, ISP Detective Sergeant Gilbertson, FBI Special Agent Shirley and I arrived in Albrightsville, PA in preparation for the service of the arrest and search warrants for Kohberger and his family's residence at
, Albrightsville, PA. After several coordination meetings, Det. Gilbertson, SA Shirley and I drove to the Pennsylvania State Police Barracks at Stroudsburg, PA to await the arrival of Kohberger after his arrest and to interview him upon his arrival.
At approximately 0200 hours on December 30, 2022, Kohberger was brought to the PSP Stroudsburg Barracks and placed in an interview room. The interview was recorded on the built-in video system at the barracks as well as Det. Gilbertson's pocket recorder. Det. Gilbertson and I were the interviewers present. This is a summary of our interview with Kohberger and is not a verbatim transcript of the interview. A full interview transcription will be attached to this case file.
Det. Gilbertson and I began by introducing ourselves and stating which agencies we represented. When I stated who I was, Kohberger stated "you do look familiar". Det. Gilbertson and I prepared our note taking materials and Det. Gilberston read Kohberger his Miranda Rights Advisement. Det. Gilberston asked Kohberger if he understood his rights to which he replied he did. After collecting Kohberger's personal information and inquiring about any medications, Det. Gilbertson and I began to speak to Kohberger. Det. Gilbertson asked Kohberger about the SWAT operation at the house to which Kohberger replied he was concerned about his parents and his dog.

Det. Gilbertson asked Kohberger if he was going to Washington State University to which he replied he was. We made small talk with Kohberger about sports for some time. Kohberger stated he didn't follow WSU football much but was a baseball fan. Det. Gilbertson asked Kohberger if he had only been at WSU for one semester. Kohberger confirmed this and said he came to WSU with his father on July 1st. Kohberger then went on to say he was a first-year PHD student in criminal justice and criminology. Det. Gilbertson asked Kohberger what the process was to apply for a PhD. Kohberger stated he applied to two places: UC Irvine and WSU. Kohberger said he was going to graduate with his Masters in Criminal Justice from De Sales and was inspired. Kohberger then asked if it was OK to engage in small talk like we were to which we replied it was. After briefly mentioning he was strengthened by the fact his mother and father were OK, Kohberger said he applied to the two aforementioned schools because they did not require the GRE exam. Kohberger then spoke about the GRE for a brief time and then said he was accepted by WSU.
Det. Gilbertson then asked Kohberger what lead him down the road of becoming a professor. Kohberger stated it was because he loved being in college and stated knowledge was far more important to him than money. Kohberger added WSU had a good program to study under, and then said "you guys know all about this more than likely". Kohberger then asked questions about University of Idaho and other Idaho Universities before stating he didn't know much about Idaho or Washington and had not left the "tri state area much". Kohberger then returned to speaking about his focus on learning and how he thought he could obtain his doctorate degree. Kohberger then said he recently returned home to see his family.
Det. Gilbertson then asked Kohberger about his time at De Sales University. Kohberger spoke for some time about his time at Northampton Community College and De Sales. Kohberger then spoke about how he became interested in criminal justice and stated he thought about being a police officer but did not want to make that commitment unless he was absolutely sure. Kohberger then continued to speak about his education and universities. Kohberger also spoke more about the process to get into a PhD program and how competitive it can be.
Det. Gilbertson then asked Kohberger about his move to Washington. Kohberger said he drove across country and wanted the challenge of driving cross country and experiencing it with his father. Kohberger then said he took a different route back home with his father for Christmas Break to avoid snow. Kohberger spoke about his travels and the risks of such travels in winter. Kohberger then began to speak about the beauty of the environment and its relationship to God and a higher power. We spoke about this for some time and Kohberger said he was raised Christian but was always a skeptic except when confronted with the beauty of the natural world. Det. Gilbertson asked Kohberger if he had ever been to the Pacific Northwest prior to coming to WSU, and Kohberger said he had not.
I asked Kohberger if he and his father made any stops along their way back to Pennsylvania. He told me they visited Colorado but the main goal was to just drive. Kohberger then told a story about seeing an unmarked police car near Kansas City speed up behind him, catch up to another vehicle, turn on its emergency lights, then drive away. Kohberger thought this was strange and was unsure why it occurred.
Det. Gilbertson then asked Kohberger about the job he mentioned. Kohberger stated he was a teaching assistant. Kohberger then talked about how busy he was and how the funding package that comes along with being a teaching assistance is

what makes the extra work worth it. Kohberger then discussed ongoing projects with WSU PD and Pullman PD. Kohberger spoke more about how being a TA is essentially assisting the professors and the department. Kohberger stated he did not get to assist with teaching with the exception of assisting with office hours. Det. Gilberston asked Kohberger if he would be a TA again next semester and Kohberger replied he would.
Kohberger then stated he understood why were engaging in small talk but would appreciate it if we explained to him what he was doing there. Det. Gilbertson asked Kohberger why he thought we were there. He said he wanted Det. Gilbertson to tell him. Det. Gilbertson said we were there because of what occurred in Moscow but did not provided any further detail. Det. Gilbertson asked Kohberger if he watched the news. Kohberger said "I watch the news". Det. Gilbertson then asked Kohberger why he thought I looked familiar. Kohberger said he wasn't sure and stated I had a familiar face and looked like someone he used to know. Det. Gilbertson then said we were there because of what happened in November jut off the University of Idaho Campus. Det. Gilberston asked Kohberger if he knew what that was to which Kohberger replied "of course". When prompted to elaborate, Kohberger said it was the incident we had been investigating for "how long has it been?" Kohberger said there were probably several incidents, and then said he was aware of a homicide because of a WSU alert he received. Det. Gilbertson asked when Kohberger received the alert. Kohberger said he wasn't sure but thought it was sometime the previous month. Det. Gilberston confirmed that was why were there and asked if Kohberger wanted to talk about that. Kohberger replied "well, I think I would need a lawyer". Kohberger then asked if we would explain to him what we were there for specifically and added he was tired. Det. Gilberston again stated we were investigating the homicides of the four students and that we had questions and things we hoped Kohberger would help us understand.
Kohberger sat back and said he had the utmost respect for law enforcement but stated it was a constitutional right to speak to an attorney. Det. Gilbertson affirmed this. Kohberger then reengaged and said the only thing he heard of from Moscow was an alert that came to his phone. Kohberger then said he wanted to talk to an attorney. Det. Gilbertson said we would stop now because Kohberger wanted to speak to an attorney. Kohberger then asked where his parents were and were his dog was. Kohberger reengaged again and asked what questions we would have for him. Det. Gilbertson then asked Kohberger again if he understood his rights and asked specifically what Kohberger wished. Kohberger asked what specifically we wanted to talk to him about and the reason. I told Kohberger he invoked his Fifth Amendment Rights and we were not going to ask him any further questions. Kohberger asked again for the reason he was there but added he would like to talk to an attorney. At this point, we concluded our interview with Kohberger and left the room.

I read this the other day too. I like the way Det.Payne and co. terminated the interview as soon as BK mentioned he wanted a solicitor. Very professional and rightfully cautious in taking no chances for a future defense to argue any violation of his rights ( recalls to me then Chief Fry's attempts to calm the pre-arrest media clamouring for info in order to protect the integrity of the investigation "We want a conviction, not just an arrest" to paraphrase).

Have to say, from my brief perusal so far, MPD seems to have done a great job with their paper work, recording and memorializing in detail each step of the way. The investigation imo was very professional and successfully coordinated across all those multiple agencies ( Bill Thompson and the ISP rep spoke to this at the presser yesterday as well). Jmo

Not discounting what BF heard -- but I'd be amazed if the perp actually did this, as it would've drawn more attention than he might have wanted ?
Wowww....

Only my opinion.

I think Maddies gran referred to him as Bryan at one point and that was all.

Supp #5- Did we know it was Parents Weekend and that the Kernodles were in town? I can't wrap my head around this tradegy.

Also Supp#7 is heartbreaking. It talks about notifying the families.

My opinion too. Others (including Emily from the friend group), have said they believe he had exposure to Maddie at some point (probably at the Greek restaurant), and it evolved from there (in his brain).

When most of us think about how you hold a knife, it’s the first image.

I believe Kohberger held the knife like the second image though.

It is a tactical grip that allows you to stab via thrusting motions, while allowing you to use the bottom of the knife (pommel) as a bludgeoning tool, without adjusting your grip.

This would explain Kaylee’s blunt force injuries, and might also explain why Dylan interpreted the knife as a vacuum.

My instinct is kaylee's new car completely threw him off. He had no idea she was there and the completely derailed his plan.

I no longer can be convinced that the LE stops on the trip from Washington to PA were just "random".

"Kohberger then told a story about seeing an unmarked police car near Kansas City speed up behind him, catch up to another vehicle, turn on its emergency lights, then drive away. Kohberger thought this was strange and was unsure why it occurred"
-- File: Supp 194_Redacted, page 2
Way behind, but that was my feeling, at least for the stops in IN. I feel they were keeping tabs on him for whatever reason.
