Pressing the bounds of ethical lawyering weakens faith in the justice system for everyone. If the judge finds that it happened in this case, I hope it does not go without penalty.

I do not blame this family. He willfully planned and executed those young people and he wil live out his life probably reading more legal journals, getting a degree, making some buddies. This would have been a slam dunk for the prosecutors. And the witnesses? Their pain cannot compare to the families of dead children. Sorry.

Did not see this coming, but surely AT had tried everything and it must have been clear to even such a thickhead as Kohberger that the path was narrowing and aimed directly toward a firing squad.

I'm glad. While it seemed very likely a jury would have found him guilty and all the "mitigating factors" against the death penalty seemed very weak, you just never know with juries, appeals courts years into the future, and some of the organizations that are very adept at finding holes through which murderers might manage to someday squirm free.

Sources confirm the prosecution has proposed dropping the death penalty in exchange for Kohberger pleading guilty to committing the four murders and serving life,

I fully understand their feelings. As a mum I know my instinct would be the same if someone hurt one of my children.

I can just also understand the need to weigh up their feelings, the feelings of the families against the DP and the impact of the trial on the other room mates, their friends and everyone else.

It doesn't make their devastation any less valid, but it is just one part of the picture.

Their devastation is the major part of the picture. IMO.
