‘KCPD murdered my only daughter,’ says mother of woman who wielded decorative sword

Grant Braaten was on "daddy duty" Thursday, having just placed lunch on the table for his three kids, when an officer rapped on his Kansas City, North, door to alert him: A young woman had broken into the house next door, triggering an alarm, and was refusing to surrender.

The scene that unfolded over the next three hours — including the woman running half naked in a bridesmaid dress wielding a decorative Japanese katana sword — was not only surreal, but also tragic.

It ended with Kansas City police officers firing at least six bullets, killing 28-year-old Ashley Simonetti, and leaving those who knew her seething, insisting that although Simonetti acted peculiar, she was never a danger to others.

I think she was acting a little more than "peculiar".

The police are between a rock and a hard place, she obviously has problems and it seems there was a stand off for over 3 hours.

I am in the UK so unsure how our police would have delt with it, but every country is different.

Oh gosh. Go read her FB. Definitely something not right there. But I don't know that she needed to die because of it. She was terrified of police and the govt. Even mentions not letting the police arrest you. Was she dangerous? I don't know.

I think in the UK we would have tasered her, from what I've seen on the many police documentaries I watch. Our police only call in armed units if the suspect has a gun.

Was tough reading some of her posts.

Most cops would have tased her here and i'm not sure why they didn't. The article says they shot bean bags and tried to negotiate with her. After all of that they should have at least tried it.

Wow. It looks like people noticed a change and downward spiral in her posts. I wish they'd been taken seriously.

I agree with her mother's statement in the OP.

They worked with her for 2.5 hours and then she came at them with her sword.

“He was saying ‘Hey, just come out. Put the weapon down. We want to talk to you.' He said ‘You’re going to get too hot in that garage. Just let it go,'" Braaten said.

Another neighbor recorded video of the tactical team using a battering ram to make entry into the garage. Braaten said the sword-wielding woman emerged from the damaged garage.

“She wasn't swinging,” Braaten said. “But she did have it right in front of her and she was going full speed ahead directly toward the two officers that eventually did shoot her.”

I just thought that maybe during the standoff that they might could have tased her. I agree once she charges then you have to shoot.

I'm not sure of this depts guidelines, but here is what is said about using tasers in people like her:

Some individuals may be particularly susceptible to the effects of CEW use. These susceptible individuals include the elderly, those with heart conditions, asthma or other pulmonary conditions, and people suffering from excited delirium, profound agitation, severe exhaustion, drug intoxication or chronic drug abuse, and/or over-exertion from physical struggle. In a physiologically or metabolically compromised person, any physiologic or metabolic change may cause or contribute to sudden death.

Maybe that's why they held off? Then when she charged them, they had no choice?

Yeah that's probably why. It makes sense.
