About Portia renting a flat in Finchley -- it's not a cheap area, even though it's not in central London. If she could afford to rent a flat there on her own, she had access to money. London is searingly expensive now even for flatshares.
SBM
in that metro article it says something like her landlord says "she was always doing something big we knew about".
To me this suggests that she knew her landlord and saw him regularly.
I have rented 'officially' in London for decades, very rarely met any of my landlords or ladies. The more expensive the property, the less likely you are to ever meet the owner. They have property manager, letting agents to do all that for them.
It could therefore be that Portia has a casual arrangement , or an unusual set up, rather than your traditional rental. IMO.
Wealthy man with annexe apartment? Wealthy man with basement flat he rents out for cheap to attractive young women? Former employer doing her a favour? The possibilities are endless.
Ie she doesn't definitely need to have access to money to have access to property belonging to someone with money.
