OREM, Utah (KUTV) — A vacant home in Utah County caught fire late Tuesday night, lighting up an Orem neighborhood and leaving residents wondering what was happening.
KUTV 2News viewers were quick to send photos and videos of the blaze, with all visuals indicating the house would be a total loss.
Orem City Fire Department Assistant Chief Shaun Hirst said the fire broke out at a 27,000-square-foot home located at 497 E. 1450 North.

History behind Orem mansion destroyed in fire
A mansion in Orem that was uninhabited and under construction caught fire Tuesday night, sending flames and a plume of smoke high into the sky that could be seen from miles away.

The home was listed for sale in November 2023 for $3.89 million. The two-story mansion sat on a 1.23-acre lot and had seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms.
The property has an interesting history.
Dr. Joseph Berg and his fiancee were found dead inside the home back in 2012. Their deaths were ruled as an accidental overdose, according to autopsy reports and a police investigation.

Federal agency that focuses on arson joins investigation into Orem mansion fire
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has joined the investigation into a massive fire at an unfinished mansion in Orem.

BATFE's involvement at the very least means authorities believe a federal crime could have been committed.
The bureau specifically investigates "federal offenses involving the unlawful use, manufacture, and possession of firearms and explosives; acts of arson and bombings; and illegal trafficking of alcohol and tobacco products," according to BATFE's site.
The fire, described as extremely hot and fast-moving by fire crews, has raised suspicions of possible arson by many, and the investigators utilized a K-9 trained to sniff for accelerants.
