I really wanted to leave this thread alone, but Catsmeow, I didn't say anything about 'these countries', a drug war or that I wouldn't go there. Perhaps you are talking about someone else.

PS, cute dog.

chicago, MY sincere apologies it was this one that I meant to and should have gone back to:

"I wonder if this might have been intended to be a kidnapping like what is going on in Mexico and in border towns of the U.S. I don't know why anyone would want to go visit any of these countries with the drug wars going on right now. " It was txsvicki, post #4.

And thanks, he is a cute dog, spoiled rotten, but he should be (It think at least).

Sorry, but I found it pretty offensive myself. First by stating 'these countries' when PR is not a country but a territory of the US, I know, I was born and raised there and am a US citizen, I speak perfect English (probably better than my Spanish)...secondly by saying that you don't know why anyone would go there and third by the 'drug wars' comment. My apologies, but you really need to be a little more versed in the politics and issues going on in that island, it is much, much different than the other islands, because it IS an American territory. There ARE areas that I would not recommend going to, or jogging around in, just like in any city/state, and there are wonderful, beautiful and even exclusive areas.
The murder of this poor woman is HORRIFIC, I hope this man rots in jail, I actually wish him worse. It sounds like his mother was a piece of work as well.
Puerto Rico is by no means perfect, there have been plenty of stories on here where people are so quick to just bash the whole freaking island and don't even think of the fact that craziness happens right in their own backyard. It's not a third world country. I was learning how to write in cursive in kindergarten and I was learning English in Kindergarten as well.

Catsmeow, the church in which I was raised had a close relationship with sister churches in PR. As a teen, I spent a wonderful two weeks on the island and have never forgotten it. (It was wonderful because I was interacting with the people there, not because I was on the beach.)

Not only am I happy to claim PR as "part of America," I'll go further and say it's one of the nicer parts!

As for PR being an "exotic island" full of "foreigners," well, folks say the same thing about Manhattan. :)

O/T: No problem!! I spent one of my vacations for 3 days in Mexico City last year, people thought I was crazy, lol, I just call it adventure! You have to be cautious everywhere.

And yes, your dog should be spoiled!! :p

A Puerto Rican man has pleaded guilty to raping and killing a pregnant Georgia tourist originally from Northern California.

Eliezer Marquez Navedo pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder, kidnapping and two sexual assault charges in the Feb. 4 slaying of Sara Kuszak.

He faces life in prison at a June 1 sentencing hearing.

TY Chicoliving, I'll be interested in his sentence, I fully expect that he will spend the rest of his life in prison given the charges and that he pled guilty.

From June 2009:

http://www.eturbonews.com/9559/puerto-rico-man-sentenced-105-years-tourist-murder

A Puerto Rico judge sentenced the son of a convicted killer to 105 years in prison Monday for the kidnapping, rape and murder of a pregnant Georgia tourist who made a desperate phone call to her fiance from the trunk of her assailant's car...

Marquez pleaded guilty last month to first-degree murder, kidnapping and two sexual assault charges. He did not face the death penalty because capital punishment can be imposed on the U.S. island only for federal crimes...

Kuszak, 36, had been living in Savannah, Georgia, and was visiting the U.S. Caribbean island with her fiance and friends. The couple planned to marry in the Caribbean in March.
