Police say a suspect is at large and considered "armed and dangerous" following a shooting in Chilliwack — about an hour's drive east of Vancouver — that killed two women and injured one man.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) have named 50-year-old Eric John Shestalo as the suspect in the triple shooting at a home in the 9700 block of McNaught Road, near Yale Road, just east of downtown Chilliwack around 11 a.m. Thursday.

Police said the public should exercise caution if they spot Shestalo. People are urged to call 911 and not to approach him.

Shestalo is described as:

  • Caucasian.
  • Five feet nine inches tall.
  • 176 pounds.
  • Last seen wearing black pants, a black jacket and a black hat with orange rim.
Police said he was last seen driving a red 1990 Jeep YJ, "which appears to have a yellow painted front end and may be bearing BC licence plate MT981W."

Do not approach. Call 911.

Of the two women who were killed, one was the mother of the alleged shooter’s child, and the other was a former girlfriend, according to friends and family of the victims.

A friend of one of the women said on social media late Thursday that the two women had been staying together in Chilliwack for “safety” reasons, after Shestalo allegedly tried to strangle his former girlfriend two months ago.

Shestalo had been due in Chilliwack Law Courts on Thursday morning on charges of domestic assault and uttering threats from April 15 in Chilliwack.

RCMP searching at Bridal Falls

Just saw it confirmed this morning on Global TV (no link) that his vehicle WAS found yesterday at Bridal Falls Provincial Park.

That's about a 16 minute drive from the crime scene at Yale and McNaught:

Don't know where he thinks he's going but that could be an awful lot of territory to search. I wonder if he stayed at a campground there and possibly had a getaway vehicle there or stolen one.

Identities of the victims has not been released but it seems this cryptic tweet from the editor of the local newspaper (Paul Henderson, editor of The Chilliwack Progress) is trying to tell us something:

So it sounds like he’s in the provincial park. Chilliwack isn’t too far from Abbotsford which has a border crossing. I don’t know how vigilant it is now but in the past it was quite lax; I sometimes used it during rush times since lines were shorter and officials were friendlier.

Any chance he crossed over or is it more likely he’s deep in the park?

"Investigators are in the process of determining why Mr. Shestalo travelled to Bridal Falls. We’re working to determine if he remains in the area or if he left," Sgt. Timothy Pierotti of IHIT said in a statement. ''

I'm familiar with the area. Yes, the manned crossing at Abbotsford is Sumas, and I'm pretty sure all border officials there will be aware of the manhunt and be on the lookout. IMO if he had no transportation, he may try going on foot through the bush and cross at an unmanned portion. While I've heard that cams have been installed over the years but I doubt they're able to capture every single part of the territory. However, maybe the mosquitoes would get him before the RCMP :D

Google maps shows Bridal Falls proximity to the unmanned portion of the Canada/US border. When enlarged, those white portions between Bridal Falls south to the border mostly appear to contain residential properties. I'm not sure of how mountainous the topography is, but it might not be a huge trek. He could also go southwest of Bridal Falls and end up at Chilliwack Lake Road (where you see Baker Trails) and be right back into Chilliwack.

Given the manpower out there right now, I think they'll get him, but if this was well planned, he may have somehow got another mode of transport and be who knows where now.

Last night the Nexus and Ready lanes at Sumas crossing from Canada to the US were closed with only one lane open. That's pretty tightened up considering it's the start of the weekend.

The Ready lane is open today but Nexus is still closed:

Is this the same incident as the Whistler incident? If not, strange to have these violent events happening so often....

And oddly enough, I just saw an alert regarding multiple shootings in Langley, BC.
Hastily started thread..

Crazy, eh? The Whistler shooting was shocking!

As for Shestalo, where could he be? I really expected that he'd have been caught by now. Out of the country? In deep hiding? Suicide? No updates.
