RI - Mass Shooting at Brown University - Providence 13 Dec 2025

Good night all! So happy to see that there is a very likely suspect in both the Brown U shootings and the MIT prof killing. I feel for all family members, loved ones and witnesses.
Nothing will repair the damage that this man caused. But perhaps the wounds can close a bit at the edges.

MIT affidavit: https://www.justice.gov/usao-ma/media/1421516/dl?inline

Couple things of note:

6. According to the FBI’s Legal Attache in Lisbon, NEVES-VALENTE and Victim

1 attended the same academic program at a university in Portugal during the same five-year period

between 1995 and 2000.

1 FBI has analyzed ballistics evidence from the shootings at Brown University and the shooting

of Victim 1 and determined that although they were both 9mm casing, they do not appear to have

been shot from the same firearm.

So this was an academic grudge/revenge situation? That was my second favorite theory.
I had a feeling it was targeted. Like I said, people wanting fame, terrorism, or to make a political statement don’t fade into the background. Had to be targeted or completely random.

<modsnip: Quoted post was removed>

It's a rental. I haven't come across his name yet (well over 100 people have lived there over the years).

There was something odd in him saying that he did not have a cellphone and could not take a photo. Something about having an iPad but not iPhone. Waiting for it to be returned. I thought that his financial situation was unusual, tbh.
Another post of his on reddit said "Thank you and respectfully I know I am. There was nothing subtle about the way he retreated from his car and I am glad I approached and saw the Florida license plate. I only regret not taking a photo of the license plate. I only had my iPad on me as I had lost my phone on public transportation. Ironically, that very evening, I was on my way to Verizon to suspend the line for a month as my phone had yet to be turned in. I was making my way back up the hill when I heard the first sirens."

It has always fascinated me when these criminals go to great lengths to escape and THEN decide to off themselves.
It makes sense when they do it as authorities are closing in, to avoid capture in the moment, but this guy got to the storage facility three days ago.
I'm really curious about the efforts some of these people make to maintain complete control, and then go ultimately do themselves in anyway.
There are some papers in the literature about "psuedocommando" killers who anticipate going out mid-assault, but it's not quite as clear why some fight hard get away (and then suicide), and some want it to end in the middle of their attack. Just a strange, strange nuance among these creeps.

Yes, some kind of 25 year grudge, probably a failure in his work and life unlike his brilliant successful co-student from Portugal. Was he married? If so maybe that too didn't work out.
I’d love to know what that grudge may have been. The two people who knew best are both dead. Perhaps friends or family were told about it over the years. It’s even possible that the grudge was only known by the killer.

There’s likely more to it than just Loureiro’s stellar academic and professional results.

The trouble is the sort of people who will kill for a 20 year old grudge are likely to form grudges on the flimsiest basis.

IMO, guy was on a mission that spanned two states and he didn’t want to get caught until he accomplished it. Quite possible that he wanted to end it all along but wanted to make sure he got his revenge or whatever before he took himself out.

Edit to add - also, it’s possible that suicide is itself often a form of control in these situations. Going out on their terms and all. Also might be a way to avoid facing justice for what he did. But at least he isn’t able to hurt anyone else now.

I don't think we know for sure that he completed his grudge list. He may still have intended to go to other places.

Did he do his undergrad and Masters work in Portugal, do we know, or did he have any of his other education in the US?

Did he apply but get rejected at any other school for his PhD program?

Where did he work in the intervening years and were there any potential grudges there?

We may never know, or LE may learn a lot more about him in the coming days. MOO

Shooter was PhD student at Brown 20 years ago.

He might have been in competition with the MIT professor at some point. MOO

Jealous of successful professor?? MOO

I'd hazard to say, jealousy, envy, "why do some people get it all so easily and others have to struggle?", etc., etc.

From the affidavits and press conferences (I forget which had what) we know that he was enrolled in the same physics program in Portugal as the MIT victim, from 1995-2000. They were there at the exact same time, and are believed to have known one another.

Following that, he was enrolled at Brown from the fall of 2000 to the spring of 2001, took a leave of absence in April 2001, and formally withdrew in July 2003.

I'm not sure we know what he had been doing since then.

As to your first part, I do tink he probably completed his list. Following the murder of the professor, he headed straight to the storage unit and never left. He was likely dead 3 days ago.
