RI - Mass Shooting at Brown University - Providence 13 Dec 2025

  • #761
I apologize if someone has already pointed this out, but while I was searching whether review sessions were publicly available, I did find a listing of final exams for the semester. There were final exams scheduled on a Saturday, and there was one scheduled in the Barus & Holley building in Room 160. The shooting took place in Room 166.

Every final I ever attended generally ended early - could the shooter have been looking for the ENGN 1000 - Projects in Engineering Design I class, found the room empty, but saw room 166 occupied?
According to the Brown bulletin that's a group project-based class for engineering upperclassmen and graduate students. I can't tell if it's supposed to be a capstone project. My first question was -- could he have been somehow aggrieved with his groupmates? But I think he would have been identified by now if that was the case.

Based on the estimated age of the person of interest, I initially wondered if he could be a grad student who had been dropped from a program associated with the professor leading the review session or with the engineering building. But I agree that in that case, he probably would have been identified by now.

I can't be the only person who thinks he took his own life shortly afterwards, whoever he is.

This is terrifying, and it should be bigger news.

I found this, and it's not a main media outlet, so take it with a grain of salt but:

I haven't found any other sources (as of yet) that confirm a pro-Israel stance, but Professor Friedberg, who's class was subject to the attack had an academic focus on Israel and was also a professor of Judaic studies. However, it's also worth noting that Professor Loureiro is an engineering professor, and the building targeted in the Brown shooting was related to the School of Engineering. I'm not saying this is related, but is the second attack on academia (a university and a college professor) in a relatively small area. I didn't see any apparent links that Friedberg or Loureiro were ever colleagues, or that Loureiro has ties to Brown.

I'm sure LE is investigating any potential links.

EDIT: I'd also be curious if there were any students that attended both MIT and Brown, or attended MIT and applied to Brown for grad (or vise versa).

EDIT 2:
Digging around, I found that Professor Friedberg received her PhD from MIT in 1992 (year per her Linkedin). Of course, Professor Loureiro was only his in his forties, and wouldn't have attending M.I.T at that time (he joined the staff in 2016) but it is worth noting that they both have ties to M.I.T.
I keep thinking about this. A friend of mine lives in Brookline and they often go to Providence as it's only 49 miles away. Brookline is basically a straight shot up I-95 from Providence. I'm aware that the FBI have stated there is no link at this time but that's likely to be expected due to the way things went over the weekend.

@NewsNation

Authorities released new video and pictures of a man believed to be a suspect in Saturday’s shooting at Brown University, which killed two students and injured nine others. The new video shows the potential suspect two hours before the first 911 call.https://tinyurl.com/22vmuwbp

Who wears a mask like that? Right at his eyeline? So he can still see but no one can see his eyes? Effective, I suppose, when you're trying hard not to be noticed, remembered, recognized but surely it stood out as WEIRD.

I would sure like to know what the profilers have profiled. And what behaviors they expect he might exhibit in the aftermath here. The usual -- changes in appearance, changes in behavior, etc.

I watched the video and a couple of observations:

-this guy is walking around pretty much all day before the shooting. To me, that indicates he’s from out of town. Got no place to go back to and bide some time. Also if he was walking around all day, he had to stop and find a restroom at some point. In a store…with cameras? At the university…in buildings with cameras?
-walking around all day, could be homeless, though I kinda doubt it.
-they know more than they are admitting. That were quick to cut off questions about what the killer shouted. They know.

Not sure, they seem to be very arrogant with fragile egos. My impression is they believe they'll get away with it. But if he did end his life, a family member will come forward when they don't hear from him (or they see the videos).

Yeah, I'm really hung up on this. It would be one huge coincidence if it wasn't either perpetrated by the same person or a very rapid copycat crime. Stranger things have happened, but..

Does Brown require student ID on entry? My college is in a major city and it's impossible to enter any building with classrooms without either swiping in with the security guard or sneaking in a back exit. My partner's rural college had no security to speak of, you could just walk in. If he's not a student, ID might not stop the perp from getting in at the time of the shooting but it may have prevented him from scoping out the inside of buildings or using the restroom. And if he is a student then the university should have a list of everyone who swiped into campus buildings that day.

Yeah, the movement patterns and timings strongly suggest he was waiting on someone or something to happen.
Quite possibly the person he turned and ran from in the video. Be interesting if they can determine if that individual was heading to that class.

I’m increasingly wondering if this will turn out to be a stalking-from-a-distance type situation. Was trying to figure out where the target was, hence the walking around and back and forth. Didn’t realize they were in a study hall until it was almost over. Just speculation based on what we know at this point.

Possible, but he took care to cover his appearance which implies an attempt to get away with it.

IMO his gait looks like someone who’s trying to conceal a handgun in his pants and not used to doing so, maybe just wedged in his waistband without a holster. That or he crapped his pants, because that’s a very specific toddle. Unfortunate if that’s the case because then his walk won’t be recognizable.

There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to the route he's taking before the shooting. It's almost as if he's wandering about killing time before the class ended at 4pm.
Agree, the most curious footage is at 14:16 where it looks like he sees someone, runs away, and then that someone chases him. Am I seeing things?

I think the attacker targeted the University,
not any specific person.

He probably chose this particular building due to lax security and no cameras.

The motive seems to me ideological,
something this particular University stands for.

The words he uttered before the attack are the key, the motive IMO.

But it seems
nobody understood their meaning.
Did he use foreign language?
Does he suffer from some MH issues and uttered some gibberish?

He seems cunning
and yet allowed to be recorded on CCTV loitering in neighbourhood for long hours.

What was his grudge? 🤔
