June 27, 2023 - informative and lengthy article -

[…]

Michael Sinotte Jr. gets into his car in North Kingstown and drives into the darkness on June 14, 2019. His parents and siblings are still fast asleep in their apartment.

As the clock strikes 2 a.m., a police cruiser lights up Route 138 and approaches Sinotte, who's pulled over on the side of the road.

“Michael said he was pulled over to use his phone and had his phone in his hand, and that was it,” North Kingstown Police Sgt. Gregory Miga said.

[…]

Sinotte suffered from schizophrenia, a diagnosis he was given in his late teens.

“He couldn’t stand loud noises, so you had to be very quiet,” Felici said. “He would have mood swings.”

Sinotte managed his symptoms with medication, but in the weeks leading up to his disappearance, he suddenly stopped the meds without medical supervision.

[…]

The behavior was unlike Sinotte, who she describes as very regimented. He usually came home around the same time every night and didn’t leave again.

As far as his family knew, Sinotte had no suicidal thoughts or signs of depression.

[…]

Two days later, Sinotte's 2000 black Honda Civic was found near the Great Swamp Management Area in West Kingstown, locked, with half eaten fast food inside.

The car was locked and turned off, no keys or cell phone nearby.

[…]

At one point, a K9 was alerted to an initial scent leading away from Sinotte’s car, but the track quickly dissipated and led nowhere.

“There were many times that canines hit on many different types of odors,” Miga said. “But we were never able to track down any single source that was putting a scent out.”

Weeks later on July 11, a secondary area was also searched.

[…]

“We are just unable to penetrate certain areas of the swamp.”

Police learned Sinotte was involved in Geocaching, a type of global treasure hunt of people looking for caches, or hidden stashes of objects, almost like a hide-and-seek game.

Hiders provide online clues for seekers, who then use GPS devices to find the hidden caches.

Police found and searched all Geocache sites in the Great Swamp on August 16.

“They came up with nothing,” Felici said. “I thought for sure they would find him.”

The only clue that was found was an item belonging to Sinotte that he had purchased at Home Depot shortly before he disappeared.

It was found on a trail, but never led to Sinotte.

[…]

Sinotte's keys and cell phone have never been found.

If you have any information on his whereabouts, call the North Kingstown Police Department.

August 19, 2023 article - discussing search conditions -

[…]

“It’s so deep and it’s seven to 10 feet tall. You could miss him in here by two feet and not see him,” he said from the dense area where a body or trace of a person could lay hidden for years or decades until someone accidentally stumbles over it.

The area down a hill from which Mikey left the last traces of roaming leads directly to a treacherous swampy area, he said.

Aug 11, updated Aug. 23, 2023 article - still missing

[…]

The only traces of him have been a locked car and some clues, but no physical remains of this young man with a history of schizophrenia. With his severe mental disorder, people interpret reality abnormally and it can come with combinations of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking.

'It's been nearly five years since a North Kingstown man mysteriously left home in the middle of the night. His car was found in the woods and he hasn't been heard from since.''

Sinotte’s mother, Ann Felici, told 12 News her son wasn’t acting unusual the day before.

“He got a full tank of gas, he got some takeout food and he went grocery shopping,” Felici recalled.

It wouldn’t be until 1:30 a.m. that Sinotte would do something out of character — he quietly left home.

Felici didn’t realize her son had slipped out of the house until the following morning.

“I knew something was wrong because that was unlike him,” Felici said, adding that she reported him missing after her calls and texts went unanswered for hours.

Details of Disappearance

Sinotte was last seen in North Kingstown, Rhode Island on June 14, 2019. The day before, he acted normal, got gas for his car, got takeout food and bought groceries. That night, he hugged and kissed his mother and said, "Just love each other." At 1:30 a.m. on June 14, he quietly left home without telling anyone and never returned. His brother saw him leave.

He was sighted by a South Kingstown police officer about an hour later; his black 2000 Honda Civic was parked in the breakdown lane on Route 138 and the officer asked if he needed assistance. Sinotte told the officer he was a GrubHub delivery driver (which was true) and had stopped to look for directions on his phone and didn't need help. He didn't appear distressed at the time.

A later check of receipts showed Sinotte didn't take, or deliver, a single GrubHub order that night. He has never been heard from again. Three days later, his car was found locked in the parking lot of the Great Swamp Management Area in the 200 block of Great Neck Road. Inside the vehicle were fast food receipts and one uneaten hamburger. Sinotte's keys and cellular phone were missing; the phone turned out to have been turned off.

Multiple searches of the 3,500 acre Great Swamp Management Area have turned up no sign of Sinotte, but searchers did find the empty plastic bag for a half-inch rope he'd recently purchased at Home Depot. About 125 yards away was the rope itself. Prior to his disappearance Sinotte had also tried to get a gun, but he failed the state's gun safety test by one point and wasn't permitted to purchase it.

His family describes him as an avid hiker and nature lover who was involved in geocaching, a global treasure hunt where people use GPS devices to look for caches of objects, which are often hidden in remote areas. The swamp is very difficult to navigate. Police searched all the geocache sites within it and didn't find any indication that Sinotte had been to them.

According to his family, after he stopped taking his medication weeks prior to his disappearance, Sinotte's behavior changed. His parents were concerned and recommended he go to a doctor, but he said he felt fine and didn't need the medicine. His mother stated about a week before he went missing, he started cleaning out his room and selling items. His mother described her son's life prior to his disappearance as "regimented" and stated it was completely out of character for him go to missing.

Sinotte's disappearance remains unsolved. He has a degree in computers from the Community College of Rhode Island.
