"On Jan. 22, 1971, the married father of three was at Dunne’s Bar and Grill on Gold St. near Flatbush Ave. Extension in downtown Brooklyn when a group of men, one toting a shotgun, raided the place.
Bolden, 45, had stopped into the bar on his way home from work. He also liked “showing the badge,” his younger brother remembered.
“He routinely stopped into the ice cream parlor, the sandwich shop and the cleaners on that strip on his way home to see if they needed anything,” George Bolden said. “They knew he was a cop and if they needed help they could come to him.”
That night, workers at Dunne’s told Bolden that they were about to close — but someone was still in the bar’s phone booth. Bolden went over, rapped on the phone booth door and said the place was closing. A minute later, the man with the shotgun burst out of the booth and started blasting as a few accomplices breached the front door.
The 15-year NYPD veteran, who joined the force in 1955, drew his gun and returned fire but was shot in the chest during the exchange and died at the scene."
