Deputy Ken Bell with the sheriff’s office says Barbara Nave was last seen at her home on South Tondaleia Drive on Feb. 9. Deputies say family members are concerned she may have left on foot. Investigators say she left her purse and personal belongings undisturbed in her home and her car was in the yard.

The sheriff's office says Nave's family has been cooperative and so far, all have passed polygraph test indicating they had nothing to do with her disappearance.

"Family members and others who spoke to Ms. Nave just before she went missing have all been interviewed and excluded as suspects," the sheriff's office said. "Although foul play has not been suspected, investigators are exploring all avenues. All of the family members passed polygraph tests and have been cooperative and eager to help authorities."

Authorities plan to continue searching on Saturday using cadaver dogs.

Family members are concerned she may have left on foot in the area. SCSO Public Information Officer Ken Bell said she made it home from Savannah because her car and personal belongings are still at her home undisturbed.

Since Barbara is 80 years of age, many believe she had cognitive issues, but Barbara was working on her “second” Ph.D. when she disappeared. With each passing day we grow more and more concerned and are reaching out to the public for help. If anyone knows anything or has heard anything regarding this case, we encourage you to please contact local law enforcement.

'Just remember Barbara': Search group of friends organizes tribute for missing Sumter woman Barbara Nave

Calling themselves Finding Barbara Nave Group, friends of Barbara Nave hope to keep interest burning about her disappearance after two years of searching with a tribute on Saturday.

Maria Rodgers and Kathleen Kreklau ask that the public come together to talk about and remember their friend Barbara from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at J&L Diner, 2114 U.S. 521 South.

"This is not a memorial," Rodgers said.

The two women said Saturday's event is meant to keep Barbara in the public's eye as well as honor their long-time friend.

Nearing anniversary of Barbara Nave's disappearance, Sumter's missing persons cases remain open | The Sumter Item (theitem.com)
It has been four years since Barbara Nave was last seen or heard from.

The Sumter County resident was last seen by her family leaving her son's house in Savannah, Georgia, on Feb. 4, 2017, where she celebrated her 82nd birthday. She was last heard from five days later in Sumter.

Her vehicle and purse were found at her residence off U.S. 521, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office. There was no sign of disturbance inside the home.

Kreklau said Nave lived alone, was deaf and had a Cochlear implant, but she had no disorders that would have prevented her from finding her way home. That's why she doesn't think Nave would just up and leave without a trace.

[...]

Nave has no family in South Carolina, which is why Kreklau and many other friends of Nave continue to search no matter how long it takes.

"There is no one to speak for her here," Kreklau said. "Being a part of this for four years, it is frightening."

"A missing persons case may be cold, but it would never be deemed solved unless the missing person is located," Dellinger said. "We continue to work any viable leads and tips from the community that come in on older cases."

Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at (803) 436-2700, the sheriff's office at (803) 436-2000 or (803) 436-2014 or Crime Stoppers, where you can leave an anonymous tip, at 1-888-CRIME-SC.

The memorial site ended up taking nearly two years to complete. The group went from council to council, asking for a piece of property. It wasn’t until April 2021 that Sumter County Council approved a site at 115 N. Harvin St., the location of a former Holocaust memorial that has since moved to a new home.

Fundraisers were held to purchase the light, benches and construction, and it wasn’t until Feb. 17 of this year that the concrete was poured. By the end of the summer, the benches and light were installed.

Several families of missing people from Sumter attended and spoke at the unveiling. Those included family members and friends of Garcia, Willie Hodge Jr., Barbara Nave, Tommy Brailey, Barbara Jenkins, Julia Bean, Naomi Collins, Stacy Lester and Shelton Sanders.

Kathleen Kreklau spoke of her friend who has been missing since February 2017, Barbara Nave.

“I think it’s good that we get together and support each other,” Kreklau said. “We never want to give up hope for our loved ones… we have to hang on to that hope, and this is a place where we can come reflect and sit and think about our loved ones and all those others that are missing.”

Circumstances of Disappearance
Barbara Nave was last seen around her property searching for animals that killed her dog. Her property is backed up to a swamp area. Barbara Nave is a very intelligent person and is very active for her age.

Distinguishing Characteristics: Scars, Marks, Tattoos: Caucasian female. Nave is deaf and wears a cochlear implant. She was otherwise in very good physical and mental condition for her age at the time of her disappearance.

Details of Disappearance: Barbara was last seen in Sumter, South Carolina on February 8, 2017. Her son heard from her on February 9, and on that same day she also emailed a friend and spoke to a contractor. She has never been heard from again.

Her friends realized there was something wrong when one of them went to her house on Tondaleia Drive off U.S. 521 and found the front door open and Nave’s purse lying inside. Her money and credit cards were still inside the purse and nothing appeared to be disturbed, but there was no sign of Nave.

Her loved ones stated she would have never left her purse at home unless she was only going for a walk, and she normally took her cherished Lhasa Apso dogs with her, but the dogs were left behind, without any food or water. Two of them were inside her house; her third dog, which had been sick, was dead.

Nave’s vehicle was in her driveway, with the windows rolled halfway down. There were no tire tracks on the dirt road leading up to her house, suggesting her car hadn’t been moved in a couple of days at least. Her passport was inside the house.

<<Nave was working on a second doctorate, this one in women's studies, at the time of her disappearance, and she had a job teaching English and acculturation to employees at Continental Tire the Americas who came from overseas. She's described as a feisty, adventurous individual who had traveled extensively and raised her children in Spain. She is interested in art and used to breed, train and show dogs. Her case remains unsolved.>>

<<Among them is my friend, Barbara Nave, who went missing Feb. 9 of 2017. The 31st will be Barbara's birthday, and February will mark eight long years missing. Under South Carolina law, after seven years, assets can be dissolved and individuals declared deceased. Barbara's case is troubling and does not meet the usual profile of age, lifestyle, etc. In many cases, there are those who have information but for whatever reason remain silent. For those, I encourage you to come forward to either a family member or law enforcement>>
