The body of a man reported missing last month, whose girlfriend was charged in his disappearance, was found this week in a shallow grave, an Upstate coroner said Friday.

“We have a murder," Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said. "This is not just a missing person anymore.”

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said in a release the body of Devantae Alzondrae Griffin, 28, has been identified after his remains were found Tuesday.

Clevenger said his office was called to an area off Evans Drive, in Roebuck, after deputies and crews with Foothills Search and Rescue found the body.

Lt. Kevin Bobo, with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, said Devantae Griffin’s body was found in the woods behind the Evans Acres neighborhood.

Bobo said Tarus Dorail Crook, 33, of Spartanburg, has been identified as a person of interest in Devantae Griffin's death.

Devantae Griffin was reported missing by his mother and was last seen shortly after midnight on March 29 leaving Winsmith Avenue with Jessica Strachan, Devantae Griffin's on-and-off-again girlfriend.

Investigators previously said they determined Strachan was misleading in the information she had provided during her initial interview and she became a person of interest in the disappearance of Devantae Griffin.

A woman held in an Upstate jail in connection with a missing man later found dead in a shallow grave has now been charged with murder, deputies said.

Jessica Strachan, the last person to see Griffin alive, was arrested in July 2022. Investigators said she stabbed Griffin to death and fled the state.

Strachan entered an Alford plea, which allows a defendant to enter into a plea bargain while still maintaining their innocence.

The Solicitor’s Office said Strachan’s other charges were dismissed after the murder plea. She was sentenced to 35 years in prison
