Wrap Around Services is a program that is offered by the state for families with special needs. (snipped)
I have a special needs daughter (she turns 7 today- whoo hoo!) and I can tell you that after all these years I STILL don't know all the services that are available to me. I've never heard of Wrap Around Services here in Ohio, but it would be cool if it were offered. Seems like ours are different agencies w/different services, financial limits etc. We were able to use the Birth-to-3 program here which helped a lot...but after that it's almost like your on your own.

I'm glad they are available for your sister though. That must be difficult.

Looks like Ohio breaks down the care they offer into different age groups. You may need to qualify again for the next age group. Although, admitedly, on their part the services do drop off from 3-5 years old. Here's the Link.

Also, it looks like they offer Family Support Services. That may be what category their wrap around services fall under. The following is a (snip) from the link.

family support services

The Family Support Service (FSS) program ensures the availability of supports to help people live as they choose; promotes their health, safety and welfare; and, helps and supports the families of these individuals in reaching these goals. The ODMRDD provides funding for FSS to each County Board of MRDD.

A primary goal for families using this service is to assist in caring for individual family members in their homes. The support provided with FSS funds enhances the quality of life for the entire family unit, and includes: respite care, adaptive equipment, home modifications to accommodate the family member with a disability, special diets, and other services/ items that are individualized to meet the needs of the family.

In order to access FSS funds, the family must be caring for the person with mental retardation or other developmental disabilities at home, and the individual must be eligible for services through their local County Board of MRDD (even if the individual is not receiving County Board services at that specific time).

For more information about Family Support Services, contact your local County Board of MRDD.

Here's another link http://www.lys.org/Programs/Group%20Homes.html to a program in Ohio that works more with foster children, drug addiction, etc. They may be able to refer you to someone that can help also. I've also included a snip from their site that gives another overview of what wrap around services are.

Wrap Around Services
This program offers youth who are stepping out of a residential treatment facility to a less restrictive environment the support of a life coach of individual aide. At times, individual aides even accompany youth to school and sit in class with them especially if they are struggling to stay in school. In addition, this program maintains a trained team to work with youth who have severe developmental disabilities or autism.
(/snip)

I decided to include that last one because it looks like they have some familiarity with state programs regarding developmental disabilities and autism. Maybe they could point you in the right direction.

It's terrible that people don't know the resources available to them most of the time. I know my sister was shocked by the amount of help she qualified for.

I hope you'll be able to find some help because everyone with special needs and their parent's need every bit of help they can get.

And Happy B-Day to her! :HappyBday

Autumn~ Wow, sounds like you've been through a lot..I hope with your dx you are feeling better and taking good care of yourself. I have heard of the disease (I watch Discovery Health channel every night) but never encountered anyone with it. Thanks for enlightening us on it!!
I wonder what the odds are of having 2 children with the disease in the same family?
I guess my point with this case is I wonder if the parents were seeking medical help like you had. If not, why?
It has an extemely strong genetic link, My mom, dad, me, my sister, nephew, niece all have it. I was the first because I had two high genes. They come in different levels and it may effect how many symptoms you have. Honestly until I took it upon myself to pay $400 out of my pocket and have genetic testing I and my family would not have known. We all have a lot of autoimmune disorders including glaucoma for me any my sister at a very young age. Its considered one of those diseases they call the hidden epidemic. They should have been concerned but I'll tell you this disease is not a disease that makes you happy to have. It changes your whole life. Including any kind of get together since you cannot eat nothing anyone else has prepared since there is too much of a chance of cross contamination. Most people would rather live in denial than make a huge change in their life.

My mom and dad even though they know they have it still refuse to change their diet. They are a convienence family like most other families and making everything homemade is too much effort. Not everybody is visibly sick its just killing them basically on the inside. Its changed my life and my family's life for the better. We all eat organic foods now and I make everything from scratch. Much healthier for all of us in the long run. I even make my own butter ;) Hardest part is I cant have life insurance anymore :( Im too much of a liability.
