Russell Laffitte, the South Carolina banker whose ties to fraudster and killer Alex Murdaugh helped Murdaugh steal millions, has agreed to plead guilty to federal bank fraud charges, according to federal court records made public Monday. In agreeing to plead guilty, Laffitte — former CEO of family-owned Palmetto State Bank in Hampton County — will avoid going to trial a second time. In 2022, a Charleston federal jury convicted Laffitte of six federal financial crimes including bank fraud, wire fraud and misapplication of bank funds. The crimes span from 2011 to 2021.

Banker Russell Laffitte agrees to plead guilty to helping Murdaugh steal millions

April 14, 2025

Under the plea deal made public between Laffitte’s lawyers and federal prosecutors, Laffitte is slated to get five years, or 60 months, instead of the seven years that U.S. Judge Richard Gergel originally sentenced Laffitte to in August 2023. Laffitte would get credit for the 13 months he has already served.

The deal assures that the names of Laffitte, a banker, and Murdaugh, a now-disbarred lawyer, will be forever linked as two of South Carolina’s most notorious white collar criminals — two men at the top of their professions who went on to betray their colleagues, their families, their careers and the trust of all who believe that lawyers and bankers always adhere to high ethical standards.

Laffitte’s retrial was scheduled to start May 5 in federal court in Charleston. Now he is tentatively slated to enter a formal guilty plea in federal court in Charleston on Friday, April 18.

[..]

Laffitte also faces state fraud charges for approximately the same number and kinds of crimes he will plead guilty to in federal court later this week.

On Monday, state Attorney General Alan Wilson told The State newspaper there are “ongoing conversations” about state charges against Laffitte but no decisions are ready to be made public. State prosecutors have said they want to put Laffitte on trial this fall for the same crimes the he is set to admit to this week.

Five years RL helped Alex facilitate these financial crimes. If AM didn't have a way to launder/move the money, he might not have continued to steal such large amounts and maybe Maggie and Paul would be alive today.

Five paltry years in club Fed is a slap in the face of Justice and the victims for the degree and amount of charges IMO. Disgusted. 🤬

Anyone else curious?

I have been wondering what’s going on with Becky Hill — her 76 ethics violations and the AG’s office investigation. This is all I can find that’s been published somewhat recently (2025).

Thoughts? (Apologize as I know nothing about CC News.)

It makes my blood boil that Hill did the things she did. Her actions could potentially give AM a new trial and the thought of that is incomprehensible, all for her 15 minutes of fame. 🤬

The good ole' boy network is still alive and thriving in SC even after this fiasco. SMDH

Yes — really what infuriates me — that it could help Alec win a new trial.

Can’t imagine what is taking so long unless it’s credibility of a couple of those individuals speaking against her. I have the feeling that BH was not the only one who enjoyed feeling some power or wanted their moment of fame. MOO. MOO.

Alex Murdaugh's surviving eldest son, Buster Murdaugh, married his fiancée, BW, in a lavish Lowcountry ceremony on May 3.

Wonder what's up with his lawsuit?

Former Colleton County clerk of court Becky Hill is reportedly set to be arraigned on a perjury charge, sources close to the #Murdaugh investigation have confirmed...

According to sources familiar with the status of the ongoing investigation, Hill could be arraigned on the perjury charge as early as this Wednesday (May 14, 2025).

So very disappointed in Hill. 😝
Glad she is being investigated.
*Furious* that Alec could get another trial! 😡🤬😡
Can you image?

Former Colleton County clerk of court Becky Hill is set to be indicted this morning for perjury, according to the state newspaper. I used to think that there was very little chance that our South Carolina Supreme Court would reverse former Chief Justice Jean Toal’s decision in February 2024 when she denied Alex Murdaugh a new trial on his double murder conviction because of Becky Hill alleged jury interference. I thought that if he was to get any relief, it would come after he exhausted his state court appeals and it would be on the federal level. According to the State Paper, the perjury charge arises out of her testimony that she gave in the February 2024 hearing in front of Justice Toal. I think this further complicates the situation and increases the chances that he will get a reversal and a new trial.

It still will come down to whether the federal standard for alleged jury tampering should have been applied by Justice Toal or she was correct in applying the state standard. Remember 11 of the jury said that nothing that Becky Hill did or didn’t do had any effect on their verdict. This is now getting very interesting. EB

Becky Hill, the former Colleton County Clerk of Court who became a controversial figure in Alex Murdaugh’s double murder trial, has been arrested.

According to jail records, Hill was taken into custody Wednesday in Colleton County and faces two counts of misconduct in office and a count of obstruction of justice.

She was released after making a $30,000 bond set in Colleton County.

Hill also faces a perjury charge in Richland County, where she does have a pending hearing. It’s unclear, however, when that hearing will take place.

In a statement to Court TV, Murdaugh’s attorneys Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, said: “We are aware of the charges filed against Becky Hill and while these developments are serious, they are not surprising. We have long raised our concerns about her conduct during and after the trial and this arrest further underscores the need to protect the integrity of the judicial process. Every defendant is entitled to a fair and impartial trial and we look forward to Alex Murdaugh finally getting that fair treatment.”

Based on the FIT news article, the perjury & obstruction charges are due to her lying about if she showed sealed exhibits (autopsy photos) to the press. That is very wrong, but it’s not related to the jury at all. So still crossing fingers that he won’t get a new trial. Mainly, because he’s canny enough to read all comments that people like us made and could adjust his behavior while testifying. I don’t want him to sway a jury that he was a good guy in a bad situation or whatever. IMO

If, as FITS News says, this involves BH revealing sealed exhibits to the press I doubt very seriously it will affect Judge Toal’s ruling.
That being said, BH is an a moron. She apparently was good at her actual job, but she so wanted to be in the spotlight that she didn’t care that she could possibly jeopardize the trial as she jostled to get in the spotlight. Very Shameful. Throw the book at her.

I think the only way to make this right at this point is to suck it up and do it over as all of this may hang a cloud on the verdict as it is. I don’t like it but I don’t think he has a chance of beating the case. It just needs to be done.
