Valerie Bauerlein — The Devil at His Elbow: Alex Murdaugh and the Fall of a Southern Dynasty

During a book signing at Politics & Prose Bookstore and Coffeeshop in Washington, D.C., about a year ago, VB answered a question from the crowd about Buster M where she confirmed that Buster did plagiarize from his then girlfriend's (now wife) law paper, and that the money Alec paid to "fixer" Karl "Butch" Bowers was tracible to have a direct link to the funds that were stolen from the Satterfield boys. I'd never heard the background about the plagiarism story before, or how Buster allegedly benefited from Alec's deed.

(This passage is provided on YT at about the 47-min mark).

That's intriguing - I never knew he cribbed off his own girlfriend's (now wife's) paper. Was it with her knowledge? If so, why didn't she get penalized as well? If not, why would an aspiring attorney stay with someone who'd do that?

Fortunately, AM has no legal right to appear at the oral argument before the South Carolina Supreme Court on Feb 11, 2026! Perhaps he will be allowed to view a replay of the live stream (with his visiting attorney). The livestream will be available for the public. (See Supreme Court of NC YT channel link below).

Unless his defense is able to convince the panel that his conviction should be tossed, chief among them that they allege there was jury tampering by the former clerk of court for Colleton County, and/or that Judge Newman improperly allowed the state to make the case that Murdaugh's ongoing financial crimes were a motive in the killings, AM should never see beyond his prison walls ever again. IMO, AM made himself comfortable there long ago, and he's exactly where he should be.

The Supreme Court of North Carolina is the state’s highest court, and there is no further appeal from its decisions on matters of state law. It is made up of the Chief Justice, who also serves as head of the Judicial Branch, and six associate justices.
