Ponder was last seen in Chesnee, South Carolina on August 28, 1993. He spent the evening with friends at J's Tavern near his home in the 6800 block of Parris Bridge Road. His friends reported that they dropped him off at the Martin Feed Mill at the intersection of Parris Bridge Road and Martin Camp Road. He has never been heard from again. His father reported him missing on September 2.
Ponder was reportedly depressed at the time he went missing, although he was not taking any medication. He has a criminal record which dates back to 1976. He was released from prison after serving half of a 5-year sentence for grand larceny just two months prior to his disappearance.
In 2003, Ponder's only son, Scott Dean Ponder, was was shot to death, along with his mother and two employees, at the Superbike store Scott owned on Parris Bridge Road. The serial killer Todd Kohlhepp pleaded guilty to their murders as well as three others, and one count of kidnapping in May 2017. He was sentenced to life in prison. Their murders are not considered to be connected to Ponder's disappearance.
In 2006, a former acquaintance of Ponder's told police he had been murdered. He has been declared legally dead, but his body has never been located. Few details are available regarding his disappearance and foul play is suspected in his case.
