A man who had been accused of killing a 26-year-old Webster woman is now charged with raping and kidnapping a different Webster woman. For now, though, the murder charge against John D. Trautman has been dropped.

Danny Smeins, the Day County state's attorney, said Trautman will be recharged with murder and burglary in the death of Stacey Gaikowski. Gaikowski was found dead in her home the morning of Sept. 13.

From August 2006:

The man accused of killing Stacey Gaikowski in her Webster home last year admitted to the crime Wednesday and was sentenced to life in prison...

In exchange for the guilty plea to murder, prosecutors said they would not seek the death penalty. Kidnapping, rape and burglary charges were dismissed in the plea agreement.

In April, Trautman pleaded guilty to rape, aggravated assault and three other felonies for an attack on another Webster woman last summer... getting the maximum sentence on each: 25 years each for rape, attempted kidnapping, burglary and robbery and 15 years for aggravated assault.
