"RICHMOND, B.C., Canada — A group of people delighted by a sea lion lingering around a pier were shocked when the animal suddenly lunged at a little girl and dragged her into the water."

It happenedon Saturday at Steveston Fisherman’s Wharf."

I've seen the sea lions in San Francisco and Monterey, never seen anything like that.

it's because they were HANDFEEDING a wild carnivore who then went for the girl's dress as he thought it was more food

How does one know what is in the mind of a sea lion?

ask the experts quoted in the article
I would expect the same way we decide that certain behaviours indicate lots of other things

How does one know what is in the mind of a sea lion?

I will stick with watching Giraffe's from afar.

That's a powerful animal. He or she could've dragged the child much deeper and drowned her. Scary. The animal might've thought her dress was good or been pissed off that they were pretending to have food and didn't.
Never feed wild animals. Its not good for them or us.

JMO, it appears the sea lion was hungry and agitated by the hand gesticulations that didn't produce food. The animal gave a preliminary warning, jumping up and snapping at the child. Being young, she didn't take that as a serious warning, and turned her back on the animal.

Once again, a warning to parents that wild animals are...well...wild.
Glad the child is o.k., and the hero too. This could have ended up much, much worse.
