Ethann McAulay was struck by a black 2011 or 2012 Hyundai Sonata while walking on Highway 404 near Major Mackenzie Dr. on April 23. Police said the driver fled the scene and was last seen exiting the highway at Elgin Mills Rd.

McAulay was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a video released by the Ontario Provincial police on Thursday, McAulay’s family held back tears as they spoke of his kind and loving nature. They described him as a “smart” and “quiet” person who loved playing with his nieces and nephews, as well as his dog Lucy.

In a news conference, also on Thursday, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt asked any witnesses to talk to police.

“If you have your spidey senses tingling, thinking, ‘You know, my co-worker always comes to work with a black car, and now he or she’s driving a rental. I wonder where the car is,’ that’s something we want to find out,” Schmidt said.

Investigators say the driver of the car slowed down or came to a stop following the collision, then continued on the highway.

"He was a human being who was just left on the side of the road by somebody," said McAulay's sister Ashtyn McAulay.

The family held a funeral service for McAulay Thursday morning.

"They just left him there," added McAulay's mother Janette Harmer, fighting back tears.

"This driver is absolutely aware of a collision," said Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt. "Ethann McAulay was left to die on the road."

Police later found debris from the crash strewn across the highway, including parts from the vehicle's headlights and side passenger mirror.

Police are also asking body shops and auto wreckers to check their records for a damaged Hyundai Sonata.

Investigators do not know what McAulay was doing on the highway at the time of the crash, and they're hoping to reconstruct exactly how it happened.
McAulay's family says they too have no indication about why he was on the highway.
They say he was a quiet person with a "great heart and spirit" who loved to play video games and avoided drinking and partying.

My first sons dad died in a car wreck. He hit a cop car head on. He died but the police officer survived with a broken leg. My baby's father was ejected a 150 yards and it took them awhile to find him in the dark. It was on his birthday and we were not on good terms.

He was so drunk that I think he fell asleep at the wheel and went into oncoming traffic. It was his 24th. Birthday. They were serving him grain alcohol on the house.

So young!
Very sorry for your traumatic loss whether you were getting along at the time or not, must have been very painful for the whole family, especially your son.
People are far more aware than they used to be about driving under the influence, nobody should be giving a driver booze, imo, especially a young driver.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt held a news conference on Thursday morning, asking members of the public to help track down the driver.

“This driver is absolutely aware of a collision. Ethann McAulay was left to die on the road. In today’s society, fleeing the scene of a fatality is not only indecent, it’s unconscionable, it’s indefensible, it’s plain wrong, and it is illegal,” he said, adding that witness reports suggest that the driver slowed down or stopped after the collision and then fled the area at a high rate of speed.

“(The family members) want to know what happened. The driver who fled is the last person who saw Ethann alive,” Schmidt said. “What was Ethann doing? Was he calling for help? Was he running for safety? Was he confused, lost, or disoriented? Was he in medical distress? What was he doing? We don’t know. Where was he on the road when he was struck?”

Shmidt said it is possible that the collision was unavoidable.

“At that time of the night on the highway, it was dark. There may be nothing that driver could have done,” he added.
