A leader of a notorious religious group that preaches polygamy and marriages involving children has relocated to Minnesota and is buying land.

Records obtained by KARE 11 show that a company in which Seth S. Jeffs is a “Managing Member” recently purchased 40 acres in a remote area near the Superior National Forest west of Grand Marais.

Using public records, KARE 11 documented that a company in which Jeffs is “Managing Member” purchased 40 acres located in a remote, rugged area between Lutsen and Grand Marais. Records indicate the cash sale was finalized in August.

When KARE 11 visited the heavily wooded property we saw an entrance road, what looked like a bobcat-type construction vehicle and a sign saying “No Trespassing.”

Records show Jeffs received a permit in December to build a 5,760 square-foot building on the property.

Mortensen told KARE 11 he believes the cash used to buy the Minnesota property came from FLDS church-related funds. If a court agrees, victims could seize the property.

KARE 11 spoke to people who live on the North Shore who are concerned about the possibility of the religious sect establishing a compound there.

Now that Jeffs has been located, they say they hope the pending abuse lawsuit and existing judgment will prevent any development.

Seth Jeffs has allegedly been residing in Cook County since August 2018, according to several interviews WTIP conducted this week. Jeffs was staying in a cabin near Caribou Lake during this time.

Meanwhile, Jeffs purchased 40 acres of property in August near Pike Lake Road. The property at 932 Pike Lake Road was purchased by Jeffs under the business name Emerald Industries, LLC.

Jeffs last known whereabouts were in rural South Dakota where he was a key figure in a compound operated by the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which is widely considered an extreme branch of Mormonism.

Seth Jeffs is listed as registered agent for the company that acquired land west of the Lake Superior town of Grand Marais. Cook County officials said Friday the property was transferred in August.

This is horrifying. I just read an article that they are trying to purchase more land so they can expand their compound. We know that child abuse is going on inside those walls and there is nothing we can do!! There is a civil case against Seth Jeffs pending. That could stop him. And they could seize the assets to give to Elissa Wall- one of Warren's victims. Another thing that could get them is tax evasion. I hope the IRS is going to crack down on them soon!!!!

Almost two years after the initial complaint was made, jury selection took place on Tuesday, June 24 in the civil case against Seth Jeffs, Emerald Industries, and Warren Jeffs. The complaint was brought by Elissa Wall, a former member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS).

The complaint asserts that Emerald Industries LLC, a Montana registered business, was founded with the express purpose of being used for fraudulent conveyance, allowing money to move between brothers Seth and Warren Jeffs, concealing it from Wall, despite a ruling from a Utah court awarding her just over $10 million to be paid by Warren Jeffs and other members of the FLDS.
......
In 2017, a Utah court ordered Warren Jeffs, the self-proclaimed prophet of the FLDS to pay Wall, a former church member, just over $10 million in damages related to sexual and psychological abuse she said she suffered before she left the FLDS community. At this time that debt is unsatisfied, according to court documents.
....
In August of 2018, Seth Jeffs purchased, through Emerald Industries, a 40-acre property in Cook County.
....
Wall’s complaint asserts that Seth Jeffs has acted as an agent for his brother, and that they have used Emerald Industries to transfer funds and assets, in order to avoid satisfying the 2017 court-ordered payment. Wall argues that because of the alleged financial connections between Emerald Industries and Warren Jeffs, money from the sale of the Cook County property should be used to fulfill Warren Jeffs’
outstanding debt to her.
