We are appealing for help to trace Shanahan MacInnes, 28, who has been reported missing from the Isle of Benbecula.

Shanahan was last seen around 1.30am on Friday, 22 November, 2024 in the Tindill Road area of Balivanich.

She is described as 5ft 8in tall, of slim build with long blonde hair. When Shanahan was last seen she was wearing a burgundy tracksuit and white trainers with a black Nike tick.

It’s possible Shanahan has other clothes with her, potentially, black trainers with a gold buckle and a black North Face jacket so she may have changed and be wearing these items.
Inspector Ross McCartney said: “This is extremely out of character for Shanahan to be missing and we’re becoming increasingly concerned for her welfare.

“We’re carrying out extensive searches of the local area and I’m appealing to anyone with information on her whereabouts, or who thinks they may have seen her, to get in touch.

“I’d ask locals to please check their gardens and sheds or any other areas where Shanahan may take shelter.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 1368 of 22 November, 2024.

Where is Tindill Road?

It seems a bit remote to be looking for a body in a shed. Was she near home when seen in one or two different outfits?

It's not a particularly big island, about 7 miles from west to east and similar distance north to south. Population of about 1300. Storm Bert has rolled in, strong winds and heavy rain. Hopefully she's taking shelter somewhere.
Is the worry that she got lost and is sheltering in place? Everyone else on the Island is accounted for?

I thought that too (and it seems to be what the police are suggesting) but why was she out at that time of night? Had she been at a partner's house and was walking home or something after a fight? The possible change of clothes makes me wonder about that. I thought it might be difficult to get lost when in a village that she presumably knows well, but at that time of night the street lights may have been out and I guess it's possible with the heavy rain. I'm not sure what time it started raining up there.

It worries me how close the sea is to where she was last seen. Could she have fallen into the sea? Went in on purpose? Or is there foul play? I'd bet with a population that small, everyone knows everyone. Wonder what people are saying.

Aleksander Benga, a 16 year old boy, is missing from Stornoway, but whilst that is also on the Outer Hebrides it's not really that close and probably unrelated.

Check garden sheds?
Edited by me for focus.

The "check garden sheds" request is quite a common one in missing person appeals, but I'm not sure that I've ever heard of a missing person being discovered in one (or in a similar place of shelter). Having said that, I can imagine that the weather on Benbecula is pretty atrocious at the moment, and I hope that Shanahan has, indeed, found some shelter.

The proximity of the sea is certainly a worry, but so too is the huge number of lochs that surround Balivanich on the landward side. The map below shows a mere fraction of the lochs that are in walking distance of the village. It is terrain that absolutely requires the use of a helicopter to search quickly, but I wonder if Storm Bert is hampering that sort of operation.

I did read on family posts, everything phone, purse, car keys were all found at mums so she has nothing with her. I can’t see her leaving that early in the morning to catch a ferry.
Shanahan is a hairdresser and apparently she cancelled hair appointments on the Friday saying she had to travel today. She was also recently engaged in September.

Fiance in Inverness.... seems to be a hefty trip to have to plan out. His birthday is this weekend.
It just seemed as if this trip was planned???? So I just don't think we are getting the full story.....

Tindill Road is a short residential street. Perhaps she was seen on a doorbell camera leaving her house? I can't imagine why people were asked to check their sheds. Surely if she needed shelter she could knock on a neighbour's door?

I wonder if she has set off earlier than anticipated to try and catch an earlier ferry or flight, thinking that Storm Bert may lead to her planned ferry or flight being cancelled. Highly unlikely, I admit, given that she doesn't have her phone, money or car keys with her.

Not the news anybody wanted to read. RIP Shanahan & thoughts are with your family & friends.
Around 1.05pm on Sunday, 24 November, 2024, officers were made aware that a body of a woman had been found in the Aird area of Benbecula.

Formal identification has still to take place, however the family of 28-year-old Shanahan MacInnes, who was missing from Balivanich, has been made aware.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
