DENVER -- A cross country skier who was found dead about six hours after he was reported missing was identified as John Thomas Fielder III, the 26-year-old son of famed author and Colorado nature photographer John T. Fielder II.

The Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office said the younger Fielder, who was known as J.T., was reported missing at about 2:31 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Jones Pass in Clear Creek County.

The sheriff's office said it was continuing its investigation. The cause of his death has not been released.

However, John Fielder told 7NEWS that his son committed suicide.

"J.T. took his life in a beautiful place that he loved to ski," Fielder said.

J.T.'s father is noted for his numerous photography books, including Colorado 1870-2000 I and II, Best of Colorado, Seeing Colorado's Forest For the Trees, and Mountain Ranges of Colorado. He lost his wife, Gigi, to early-onset Alzheimer's in late 2005.
