In preparation for the appearance of William Walker on November 12th, a member working with the County Attorney's office has requested that as many people as possible write impact letters regarding the senseless death of Tawni Lee.

What they are looking for:
How has her loss affected people, the community and the nation?

Let us do her proud by turning in as many as possible: Let us not forget that this child was an aspiring artist and actress...what might she have contributed had she made it past her 17th year????

I have a question about this..... I am appalled the State of AZ tried William Walker under an alias, when it is apparent they knew from LDJ, his name was William. This is prolly not something we should include in this letter. Am I correct in my thoughts, that would be something Tawni's family would have to pursue with the state, or against the state? Of course I am also appalled that he was able to plead to a lower crime and LE dropped so much of this, knowing William had a previous criminal history.

I am sure I can come up with something based on the reports of Tawni pleading for her life.

Great point-I plan on repeating William Walker aka Alonzo Fernandez until I am blue in the face, so to speak. JMO.

Now if the State decides to try and vacate the plea deal based on his real ID vs. fake, we can just call him Dollar Bill or whatever...just being fresh...I would make sure to mention his real name and aliases so we can drive home the fact that he clearly knew that he had something to hide....

Should we include ALL aliases? IF so, I do not recall seeing a link or post with ALL of his names spelled out. It would make it so much easier to have that in one place... If not I will take your lead and use William Walker aka Alonzo Fernandez. Great idea!

Seeing as how we only have an 8x11 sheet of paper and we don't want the judge to fall asleep...JK! I would stick with the ones we know are associated with Tawni's case. The presentencing report will detail out the 6 or 8 or 12 he has...

Some of you who have sent them to me have requested I review them to see if they "make sense." The emotion expressed in all of them is completely overwhelming. I want to post mine only as a quid pro quo for those of you who allowed me to see yours-it was so hard to write.

Dear Judge Vanderpool,

You have before you William Walker, aka Alonzo Fernandez, looking for mercy and for you to honor a plea deal whose basic principal is built on a lie-that he is Alonzo Fernandez. By now the court has seen sufficient evidence that Mr. Walker is a career criminal who has one tool in his tool belt worth noting-the ability to deceive. Before your judgement is rendered, I wanted to lend my voice to a number of people who have written you to let you know something about the primary victim in this case, Tawni Lee Mazzone.

Tawni came into my life well before her name was restored; she was a young woman who had clearly suffered a terrible death, but whose morgue photo had an amazing beauty. It was impossible not to be captured by the circumstances of her death and what it would take to restore her name after nine years of being unidentified. I worked for more hours than I can count speculating, investigating, writing teasers on City Data and Craigslist once a core group of us had agreed on a strategy to try and uncover her name...she stayed with me.

And then came August 22, 2008. I received a forwarded email from a staff member at Websleuths.com that someone had written indicating that Tawni belonged to them. At 10PM, I spoke in hushed tones to Tammy Jacobsen, Lynn, MA who claimed that the dead girl was her niece. She related to me a remarkable story about how Tawni's only sibling just that morning had decided to check the MedEx website in the event that his long missing sister was there. The very first photo he brought up on his computer was 99-305 and he knew what had happened to his baby sister. He contacted his mother in GA, his father in CO and his family in Lynn, MA to have many sets of eyes look and see what he already knew-beautiful, troubled Tawni Lee Mazzone was dead.

Just past midnight on August 23rd I had the first of many conversations with Mike Mazzone, Tawni's brother. His grief and rage were palpable-you see when the family googled 99-305, "Maricopa Jane Doe" they brought up the Websleuths site, complete with all of the research on the child and the perpetrator who had skipped town after pleading to failing to render aid, many years ago. They read how the man left her in the dust on the highway, broken but alive. They read about the terrible injuries she had received when she hit that highway at 75 mph and then had the courage to try and raise herself up when she finally stopped tumbling. For them, the questions and the nightmares were just beginning.

On January 27, 1999, the world lost out when that precious girl died. The future artist and actress never took flight-never another warm hug for the brother she loved so much, never another head toss or smile for her friends. She lived for one day-but ultimately died alone within an hour of the home she was taken from and the mother who desperately loved her wayward child. She will never attend college, run a marathon or write the great American novel. She didn't even get a chance to shake the dust from her adolescence and become the gracious, loving and lovely woman she was destined to be.

I will never be the same after working on Tawni's case and walking a few steps with the family while we worked through the identification process-she has changed my life forever. I keep my children closer in preparation for meeting the William Walkers of this world; in the end the Tawni Lee Mazzones of our communities cannot be wasted on the likes of career criminals who use brute force and deception to ultimately rob them of their lives.

Thank you for your time.

Yay!!! Thank you, believe09, for giving us the opportunity to get justice for Tawni. Fingers crossed that it has some meaningful impact. If not, I may become WW's shadow until he gets what he deserves.....

The judge received our letters and has even written a short response to them that I do not have yet. It will likely be available after the hearing on Wednesday.

WOW-this is huge guys...huge. This is where you made impact YET AGAIN. It must have been quite a thing for the judge to have people who only knew Tawni in death going to bat for her. The prosecuting attorney were very pleased-that is all I know.
