I must say, I was quite shocked at how Gracie's testimony came across. She contradicted herself a few times and I found it hard to follow the thread.

I didn't hear her testimony in the first trial, so I don't know how it compares, but I would never be able to shrug off the doubt about her recollection of events, if I was on the jury.

I don't think it was wrong at all to use Gracie. As somebody else said, it might not be the hook, but its a piece of the puzzle. Not to have her testify would take a way a little piece of the truth - truth being, there is a woman who insists she saw JY in King NC at 5:30 in the morning. Girlfriend knew what she saw, knew what happened and knew who it was. That she couldn't verbalize it to everyone's satisfaction is down to brain injury.
