Switzerland - 40 dead and 116 injured in fire in bar in Crans-Montana, Swiss ski resort, 1 January 2026

By the way, the pattern of the burn reminded me the massive Kemerovo fire in 2018 (the so-called “winter cherry fire). It started as a short circuit of the lamp in a play complex. The spark fell into a basin filled with…you nailed it, polyurethane cubes. Since they all burned out, the cubes supplied by the same company to St. Petersburg similar complex were checked. They were found out to be highly flammable.

The Reddit discussion mentioned the astonishing speed with which the burning foam released the thick smoke, too. Perhaps that case was slightly atypical because the polyurethane cubes were burning not under the ceiling but on the floor.

Or maybe the level of smoke in Constellation needs to be checked once again? We all speak about the fire, but perhaps smoke inhalation was a bigger problem?

I think we have to look at all such cases again and see how often foam insulation is involved.

some more information about what treatment and (hopefully) recovery will look like..

The first 24 to 48 hours are referred to as the acute phase. During this phase, oxygen, fluids, electrolytes, and proteins must be administered. The wounds and organs are monitored, and sometimes surgery is already performed. During the acute phase, patients are sometimes placed in an artificial coma.

Oxygen is one of the first aspects of treatment to be administered. “If the mucous membrane of the windpipe swells after damage caused by hot air, a tube must be inserted as quickly as possible.”

Victims who have inhaled toxic gases must also be given extra oxygen. “We sometimes increase the pressure of that oxygen so that toxic gases such as carbon monoxide in the lungs and bloodstream can be flushed out.”

Many of the seriously injured victims have external burns. “The larger the burned area, the greater the risk,” explains burn specialist Keli Jansen of the Rotterdam Burn Center. Some of the injured have burns covering 60 percent of their bodies, i.e., 60 percent of their total skin surface. “Your fingers and palm together account for one percent,” says Jansen.

Jansen explains that the skin is the first barrier against everything from the outside, such as bacteria and viruses. “With a large-area burn, a large part of that barrier is gone. Infections can enter more easily, your immune system is working at full speed, and you lose many important substances, including moisture. This can make the body very ill.”

A third-degree burn does not heal on its own. It must be covered with the patient's own skin tissue. Van Zuijlen: "If someone has 60 percent third-degree burns, that means we still have 40 percent skin to harvest, as we call it. The wounds are covered with skin grafts. We have all kinds of techniques for stretching skin cleverly and using it effectively."

Donor tissue can only be used to temporarily cover a wound when someone is very ill. Donor skin cannot adhere; ultimately, the patient's own skin must be used again.

In some situations, patients are placed in an artificial coma. Jansen: “This happens when people are in incredible pain. Pain can cause people to become stressed, which makes the body work even harder. In such cases, it is sometimes better to keep someone asleep, not only to bypass the pain, but also to keep vital parameters such as temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure under control.”

Recovery from such severe burns takes a long time. “Victims spend months in a burn center, the first few weeks of which are spent in intensive care. This is followed by months in a rehabilitation center. Once home, you have to continue outpatient rehabilitation, which can easily take two years, if not longer,” says Jansen.

The healing process for burns varies from person to person. Some patients experience pain. Others describe stinging, burning, or tingling sensations. Some patients feel no pain, sometimes because the burns are so deep that nerve endings have also been burned. In addition to pain, many patients experience intense itching, according to both doctors. This often keeps patients awake at night.

Van Zuijlen refers to the café fire in Volendam 25 years ago. “The people with the least pain actually needed the most urgent care. It was a bizarre situation, because some people gave up their place in the ambulance to injured people with superficial burns, because they were in much more pain.”

After wounds heal, following surgery or skin grafts, scars remain. Movement becomes more difficult because the healed skin and scars are tight around the joints. According to both doctors, the psychological consequences of burns are also significant. You often have to deal with trauma and learn to live with a different appearance. Sometimes shame is involved.

Nevertheless, there is hope, even for victims in Switzerland, according to Van Zuijlen and Jansen. They believe that many people with severe burns who get through the initial acute phase will survive, provided that no infections occur. Young people also have a greater chance of survival.

And even though it takes a long time, people with a history of burns often regain their independence, say both experts. “Over time, scars become more supple and there are options such as skin therapy and plastic surgery,” says Jansen. “Fortunately, reintegration into society is usually successful,” says Van Zuijlen.

I think they started using patient’s own cultured skin for large burn area

Yes, autologous (patient's own) cultured skin, often called Cultured Epidermal Autograft (CEA), is a standard and effective treatment, especially for large, deep burns, by growing skin cells in a lab to create large sheets for grafting.

For areas where cosmetic results are important (face), or to reduce contractures, full thickness skill grafting is used

"The municipality itself controls the situation.

The Zurich Forensic Institute is now preparing an expert report on the case. The central question already arises:
Was this club actually properly inspected and approved?

The canton of Valais has a unique feature:
unlike most other cantons,
there is no mandatory building insurance.

Fire protection is not the responsibility of the canton, but of the municipalities
– where everyone knows everyone else.

Crans-Montana also has its own fire safety officer responsible for inspections and safety.

The municipal council bears the political responsibility.
At a press conference on Thursday,
the mayor could not say whether the club had even been approved for so many guests.

Now not only Switzerland is looking at Valais
– but the whole world.
The victims are people from several countries.
Hundreds of relatives are waiting for answers."

Crans-Montana has a population of about 10,000 people. In a place that small, the councillors, council staff and local business people will all move in the same circles and know each other personally.

Geez I can just picture them in a circle pointing fingers at each other.

Yep.

He is a great guy but this photo is damning to the owners, too. It doesn't look like an easily opened door.
If you by "It doesn't look like an easily opened door." mean the photo at the very bottom of that post, it seems to show the glass windows of the restaurant at street level, not *a door off to the side and forced it open.* as it's said in the post from Daily Mail that Dotta posted. Is it known that the photo is of the man in the article?

If the photo is of those glass windows in the restaurant, and not of an actual doorway, then they probably were locked now, and not to be opened during the winter. I have posted earlier in this thread that a young man used a table, and then his feet, to break down those windows to be able to get out.

With the main entrance blocked up by people cramming to escape,
he identified a door off to the side and forced it open.

I sure hope that wasn't the 2nd emergency exit.

Well, the wife got burned, too.

Are you saying the female owner was there that night and received burns? Is she in the hospital?

True, but they have to be able to keep the patient alive long enough to grow the replacement skin. What may be feasible for 10% burns probably isn't for 60% burns.

She was reported to have suffered a burn to one of her forearms, although I've not seen any details of how serious it is.

Absolutely. I really had the fear of god put into me by a fire safety talk in my first week of university. The guy giving the talk described flashover in great detail, and played security footage from a music venue fire (also started by pyrotechnics ☹️) that showed people trampling over each other trying to get to the exit... at the time I felt like it was irresponsible of him to show something so graphic with no warning (and tbh I still think that a little bit), but I can't deny that it was extremely effective
Video of The Station fire in Rhode Island (2003) is routinely used for fire safety training in many countries because it vividly demonstrates the compound hazards of using pyrotechnics in a club with foam insulation, poor main entry/exit egress leading to trampled patrons piled on top of each other (the building was designed as a tavern in 1946, not as a club with its much higher volume of patrons moving together), meandering layout, blocked and hidden exits, and the very short time anyone has to exit alive (about 60-90 seconds) once flames have started.

Criminal investigation opened against bar operators

The public prosecutor's office has opened a criminal investigation against the operators of the bar “Le Constellation.” According to a statement, the initial findings of the investigation into the fire have led to the opening of a criminal investigation against the two operators.

“They are accused of negligent homicide, negligent bodily injury, and negligent causing of a conflagration,” the statement continues. In the statement, the public prosecutor's office reminds readers that the presumption of innocence applies until a final conviction is handed down.

"French manager of ski bar seen for the first time since being charged with manslaughter.

1767457824840.webp

Police announced on Saturday afternoon
that a criminal investigation had been opened against Jacques Moretti, 49, and his wife Jessica, 40, on Friday night.

The couple, who opened Le Constellation bar in 2015, have been charged with:
- manslaughter by negligence,
- bodily harm by negligence,
- and arson by negligence.

Asked if he had anything to say to the families of the dead and injured,
Mr Moretti said simply 'non'
before getting into a Jaguar car and driving off."

Two swiss girls of 21 and 16 years old and two swiss boys of 18 and 16 years old have been also identified

So young!!!
With the whole lives ahead of them.

I cannot even imagine what their poor parents and siblings are going through :(
Living in never-ending nightmare without possibility of ever waking up.

The cause of death and suffering of these victims add to torture their families are experiencing 😢

Why would some people condemn others to such suffering
by not following simple, reasonable and well known Safety Rules?

Why are some so negligent and indifferent?

Yes, I think that was the footage we were shown. I'll never forget it, that's for sure.
