U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken answering Andrea Mitchell's question live on MSNBC about efforts to find Austin Tice in Syria:“We have fanned out everywhere, with every possible source, every possible actor who might be able to get information – and this involves anyone and everyone who has some relationship with the different rising authorities in Syria. We've been in direct contact with them ourselves. We have other partners on the ground, and we're looking at getting on the ground ourselves as quickly as we can. But the most important thing is this. Any piece of information we get, any lead we have, we're following it. We have ways of doing that irrespective of exactly where we are. And I can just tell you that this is the number one priority, to get Austin.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would enquire about the whereabouts of Austin Tice, the American journalist missing in Syria, while responding to a question from an NBC correspondent at his lengthy end-of-year press conference.

Asked by the US network’s Keir Simmons about Tice on Thursday, Putin said, “I haven’t met with President [Bashar al-]Assad since his arrival in Moscow, but I plan to do so, I will definitely talk to him,” referring to the Syrian dictator who has sought refuge in Russia after the collapse of his regime.

The mother of American journalist Austin Tice, who was taken captive during a reporting trip to Syria in August 2012, arrived in Damascus on Saturday to step up the search for her son and said she hopes she can take him home with her.

"It'd be lovely to put my arms around Austin while I'm here. It'd be the best," Debra Tice told Reuters in the Syrian capital, which she last visited in 2015 to meet with Syrian authorities about her son, before they stopped granting her visas.

"We certainly felt like President Biden was very well positioned to do everything possible to bring Austin home, right? I mean, this was the end of his career. This would be a wonderful thing for him to do. So we had an expectation. He pardoned his own son, right? So, where's my son?"

Almost a week after Assad's ouster, some US officials fear that Tice could have been killed during a recent round of Israeli airstrikes. Officials are also concerned that if Tice was being held underground in a cell, he may have run out of breathable air as Assad's forces shut off the electricity in many of the prisons in Damascus before the president fled

Exclusive – Middle East Now:

A private source has denied to Middle East Now the reports claiming the discovery of the remains of American journalist Austin Tice in a village in the Aleppo countryside.

The source revealed that “a team from the American ‘Soufan Group’, funded by Qatar, has been searching for the remains of individuals executed by the terrorist organization ISIS over the past three days.”

He added that the team “found today in the village of Dabiq in the Aleppo countryside the remains of six bodies, some of which belong to Americans, but Tice’s remains were not among them. Tice was detained by the regime in August 2012.” He noted that “the remains were transported out of Syria for DNA testing.”

It is worth noting that the Soufan Group is a U.S.-based organization specializing in global security and intelligence consulting. It was founded by former FBI agent Ali Soufan, an American of Lebanese origin.
