Islamic State militants in Syria have carried out their first beheadings of women in the country. Although IS has executed more than 3,000 people (including 74 children) since declaring a caliphate there a year ago, female victims have previously been stoned, invariably for alleged adultery.
The two women and their husbands in this case however, were all beheaded for witchcraft and sorcery. The killings took place in Mayadeen in the province of Deir Ezzor, according to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights. The victims had been found to be in possession of charms.
