My daughter got lice from a kid at school and it was very difficult. Rid was ineffective, even after painstakingly combing out all the "nits" I could see from her thick dark hair, some remained and the cycle began again. The school nurse told me lice like clean heads and dark hair, better than dirty or lighter hair. What worked for us was olive oil. It is very safe and conditions the hair. The nurse sent home a video on this method. You saturate the head with olive oil and put on a swim cap before bed. It really worked. It smothers them and it is non-toxic. It doesn't smell like chemicals and my daughter was on the swim team so she was used to the cap. I will never forget how she cried when the lice "came back." It is an awful experience, to be sure.
