Terrell Owens gives emotional speech at alma mater during Hall of Fame weekend

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Former NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens delivered an emotional, 40-minute speech at his former college, the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, during which he reiterated why he skipped this weekend's Hall of Fame ceremonies and acknowledged Jerry Rice, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant as athletic inspirations.

"There's been a lot of speculation and false reports as to why I chose not to be there,'' Owens said of the Canton, Ohio-based Hall. "I would like to set the record straight: It's not because how many times it took me to be voted to the Hall. It's about the mere fact that the sportswriters are not in alignment with the mission and the core values of the Hall of Fame.''...

I read it twice and still don't understand why he didn't go to Canton.

Basically, it seems that the decision came down to disrespect: Owens didn't like the way the media portrayed him during his career and he didn't like the fact that voters made him wait three years to be inducted. (bbm)

"What I will say is that my character is something that I will always defend," Owens said in a recent interview with TMZ. "That's what happened the first two times around with the Hall of Fame. When you got the media -- over the course of my career -- that habitually told lies and obviously, the media and everybody else, even the writers, that really started to factor in the character issues, that's what it's mostly about."

Owens also added that he would've attended the ceremony if he had been inducted on the first ballot back in 2016.

Seems many agree induction is a "flawed voting process" that lacks transparency, but few agree skipping ceremony will change anything....

Skipping the ceremony won't change anything and it makes him the center of attention - he didn't have to share the stage with anyone. I would respect his choice if he had declined the nomination instead of getting someone else to go get his jacket and having his own private press conference. But that's how he is so it's no surprise.

Hah! That's funny. Thanks for sharing.

If you're a Randy Moss fan (or an NFL fan, or if you like sports documentaries, etc) and haven't watched the 30 for 30 about him I highly recommend it.
