Hande Çinkitaş was found murdered in her home on January 4, 2001, in Kadıköy, Istanbul. At the time, she was only 12 years old. Despite the lengthy investigation, the identity of her killer remained unknown for years. Initially, her father, Nezih Çinkitaş, and stepmother, Şehnaz Çinkitaş, were considered the primary suspects, but due to a lack of sufficient evidence, no charges were filed against them.
The case remained unsolved, adding to the mystery surrounding it. However, in 2020, a new DNA analysis by the Forensic Medicine Institute revealed traces of Nezih Çinkitaş's DNA on the knife used in the murder. This finding led to the reopening of the case. Despite this crucial piece of evidence, both suspects were acquitted following the trial.
After an appeal from Hande's mother, Handan Yılmazer, the court sentenced Nezih Çinkitaş to aggravated life imprisonment. However, instead of an arrest warrant, the court imposed judicial control and a travel ban on him.
Today, 23 years after Hande Çinkitaş's murder, justice has still not been fully served. Handan Yılmazer, Hande's mother, continues to await justice, hoping that the true perpetrator will finally be held accountable.
The ambiguities in this case raise many questions. Despite the DNA evidence found years later, the release of the suspects has sparked concerns about whether justice has truly been served in this case.
